West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries could be on the move after just one season in Morgantown.
According to Hawkeye Insider reporters Sean Bock and David Eickholt of 247Sports, DeVries is expected to meet with the University of Iowa on Monday to discuss the school’s head coaching vacancy.
“We reported on Monday that West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries and the Iowa athletic department are expected to meet on Monday,” Bock and Eickholt wrote. “Things could change, but the expectation continues to be that DeVries and Iowa will meet on Monday with the location being unclear.”
DeVries, a native of Aplington, Iowa, has deep ties to the state. He played collegiately at Northern Iowa before launching his coaching career at Creighton, where he spent nearly two decades as an assistant.
Now, he’s reportedly in talks for what would be a homecoming.
DeVries just wrapped up his first year at West Virginia, leading the Mountaineers to a 19-13 record, including a 10-10 mark in Big 12 play. WVU was the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament field, a tough ending for a solid debut season.
Before landing in Morgantown, DeVries turned Drake into a mid-major powerhouse, guiding the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances over six seasons. He compiled a 150-55 overall record and a 79-33 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Iowa is searching for a new leader after parting ways with longtime coach Fran McCaffrey.
DeVries’ ties to the state and his proven track record could make him a top candidate to take over the Hawkeyes program.
