Breaking A Major Shift in Big Ten Football as a Prominent Quarterback Enters The Transfer Portal After Starting Nine Games In 2023
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten will be exciting heading into this season because Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Washington are coming to the conference, and Oregon is one of the best teams in the country. At the same time, USC has excellent talent, and Washington was just in the National Championship game last year. Still, they lost many players and their head coach, so it will be tough for many of the old Big Ten teams to win, and one of the old-school teams will have to go without their starting quarterback.

Ohio State And Michigan Have Been The Class Of The Big Ten

When you think of the old-school Big Ten, the names that come up are Ohio State and Michigan, who have been the class of the conference the last 20 years, with Ohio State winning two National Championships and Michigan winning one in that span and every single team trying to catch them. One of the teams in the Big Ten that has been pretty good the last handful of years is Iowa, which has represented the Big Ten West a lot in the conference title game. They have a great defense, but their offense sometimes struggles to score, and one of the players responsible for the struggling offense has entered the transfer portal.

Iowa Is Losing A Key Player

According to 247sports.com, Iowa  quarterback Deacon Hill entered the transfer portal; Hill started nine games in 2023 after starting quarterback Cade McNamara had a season-ending injury.

McNamara will likely be back as the starter in 2024, leaving Hill as the backup. Most Lilkey wanted to avoid sticking around again in a place where the only path to the field was an injury.

Iowa Is Heading Into A New Era

Iowa is entering a new era after letting go of long-time offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, whose offense was not good the last few years. The new offensive coordinator, Tim Lester, will have to turn this offense into a contender to keep up with the great offense already in the conference and the new ones coming in.
