It is a new era of college football where NIL and the transfer portal reign supreme over the sport.
Since the transfer portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, thousands of entries have occurred. Whether it's players from the Group of Five or FCS levels looking to land at a bigger program, a player who wants more playing time or a player who wants more NIL money, the reasons for the transfers are a case-by-case situation.
However, as fans have grown to know and disdain, some players enter the portal because they are lured there by another school offering more money. Something that a report by Action Network's Brett McMurphy confirmed did not work on Iowa State star quarterback Rocco Becht.
"Iowa State QB Rocco Becht, who was pursued by multiple SEC & ACC schools to enter the portal, is returning to the Cyclones next season, sources said," wrote McMurphy. "Becht, one of the nation’s top QBs, remained at ISU because of the loyalty & culture under coach Matt Campbell."
While it's unclear which programs were after Becht, it isn't too much of a surprise. The third-year signal caller out of Wesley Chapel, Florida, is putting up career numbers in 2024. He threw for a career-high 3,235 yards with 22 touchdowns (one shy of tying his career-high) and also rushed for a career-high seven touchdowns.
He led the Cyclones to the program's first-ever 10-win season and also was able to help the team make the Big 12 title game despite being picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll.
He and the No. 18 Cyclones will be taking on the No. 13 Miami Hurricanes on Dec. 28 in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The game will kick off at 3:30 ET and air on ABC.
