Deion Sanders Had a Message for Critics After Colorado’s Win

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders used the podium on Saturday night to defend his offensive coordinator after the Buffaloes earned a win over Wyoming. Pat Shurmur has been the target of heavy criticism in recent weeks as Colorado struggled to find rhythm offensively, but after a stronger showing against the Cowboys, Sanders made sure to point out that the narrative had shifted.

“I don’t hear nobody talking about Pat tonight,” Sanders said, pushing back against media questions that have swirled since the start of the season.

The comment came after Colorado put together one of its most efficient offensive outings of the year. Quarterback Kaidon Salter returned as the starter and gave the Buffaloes balance, spreading the ball to multiple receivers while also using his legs to keep drives alive. The offensive line, which had been under scrutiny for much of the early season, protected better and opened lanes in the run game. The result was a performance that quieted at least some of the doubts that had surrounded Shurmur.

Sanders has been outspoken since his arrival in Boulder, never shying away from defending his staff or players. His remark about Shurmur reflects both loyalty and a message to outside critics that Colorado’s issues cannot be pinned on one coach. It also showed confidence that the offense is moving in the right direction, particularly with the Big 12 schedule ahead.

For Shurmur, the win provided much-needed validation. The former NFL head coach was brought in to give Colorado a steady hand and a professional structure on offense. While the results have not always met expectations, Saturday’s outing showed what the system can look like when execution matches preparation.

Colorado’s offense still has questions to answer, especially against tougher competition, but the win over Wyoming buys breathing room. More importantly, it gave Sanders a chance to reinforce his trust in his coordinator, a message that can resonate inside the locker room as much as outside it.

Whether the improved performance marks a turning point remains to be seen, but Sanders made clear that he is standing by his staff. For one night at least, Shurmur’s play calling delivered, and the head coach wanted everyone to take notice.
