Deion Sanders Sends Message After ESPN Report on Colorado's QB Decision

The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback situation continues to get more bizarre as the days roll on.

In the team's 31-7 Week 2 win over Delaware, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders opted to play three quarterbacks. Kaidon Salter, who won the battle out of camp, got the start and played a couple of drives before five-star freshman Julian Lewis came in for two of his own.

To the surprise of just about everyone in college football, Sanders also gave reps to the third-string quarterback, Ryan Staub. The third-year quarterback, who backed up Shedeur Sanders for the past two years, completed 7-of-10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, with one of the scores going for 71 yards.

While Sanders was unwilling to name a starter for the team's Week 3 game against Houston after the victory, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Tuesday that Staub will get the start. A development that Sanders hours later.

"I'm not confirming nothing to y'all," Sanders said. "Y'all know that. We ain't like that...We have capable guys. Staub has been doing a phenomenal job getting a majority of the reps, but I haven't made that assessment and decision yet."

While Sanders wouldn't declare Staub the starter, he did reveal that his son and former quarterback reached out to Staub following the breakout performance.

"“He’s talked to him as well," Sanders said via DNVR. He’s called him. First you have to understand, Staub is a lovable dude. Everyone who has played here has reached out to him. He’s always been a standup guy. He’s not going to be one of those guys where another guy is starting and he’s on the bench sulking mad. He was giving signals last week. Going from giving signals to playing in the game that never happens. Hats off to him, he’s the ultimate teammate."

It's unclear if this is gamesmanship from Sanders or if genuinely doesn't know who will start yet, but needless to say we have learned to expect nothing less from Colorado.
