The 2024 NFL Draft is getting close, making it an excellent time to highlight some of the class' best players with scouting reports. Each report will include strengths, weaknesses and background information.
Here's our report on Edgerrin Cooper.

STRENGTHS
- Tall, rangy, athletic feel to movement with light, bouncy feet and fluid change of direction. Played fast and fluid.
- Outstanding play speed with the range to play inside out sideline-to-sideline. Easily ran down a mobile QB.
- Run game snaps with excellent key and diagnose, allowing him to beat climbing OL blocks and make tackles.
- In the run game, showed body flexibility to bend to avoid OL blocks without losing gap integrity or balance.
- Snap to his movement. Twitch and suddenness in confined space. Read through traffic, then explosive burst.
- Forceful striker playing downhill in the run game. Naturally explosive in a short confined space, a critical trait.
- Played with physicality and showed natural power throughout his body. He popped runners, and they stopped.
- Patience and vision to read blocking schemes and the running back, then sifted through traffic to make tackles.
- Showed explosive downhill burst and lateral quickness with hand usage to defeat backs and win as a blitzer.
- Explosive downhill burst as a blitzer. Elite accelerating speed off the edge with contact power and bend.
- Zero to 60 in a heartbeat. Sudden explosive mover who puts it into drive instantaneously. Elite burst and speed.
- Strong coverage defender, especially in the underneath zone. Can match up to TE man-to-man. Can carry No. 3 to trips.
WEAKNESSES
- Does not have a lot of mass in his body. Much more of a lean frame with a lighter build and narrower base.
- At times could be a beat slow in his key and diagnose, which negated his explosive trigger and explosiveness.
- Some run game snaps in which he was a little tentative to react even when he saw it clearly. Little hesitation.
- There will be questions regarding physicality/competitive toughness in the box. Can he consistently stack and shed?
- Needs to show better awareness of routes as an underneath zone defender. At times a little stiff in transition.
NFL TRANSITION
Cooper is one of the most explosive LB prospects in the 2024 draft class with his sudden twitchy movement, instant acceleration and elite closing burst and speed. He is a long, lean, well-proportioned LB. He has an outstanding athletic profile with explosive suddenness, hip-core flexibility and reactive trigger. That gives him a playmaking dimension from sideline to sideline with dynamic play speed and range.
Cooper has elite explosiveness, which also showed up as a blitzer, where his accelerating burst, especially off the edge with a longer runway, was a challenge and mismatch for most running backs. Cooper has arguably the most desirable combination of length and athleticism of any LB in the 2024 draft class.
While he needs to get stronger and improve his overall key and diagnose, his alignment versatility and playmaking dimension will get him on the field, particularly in sub defenses, with the traits and skill set to develop into a complete and multi-dimensional three-down LB. Still, my sense is that it will be a process that will take some time.
While Cooper’s tape is impressive regarding tier athleticism and dynamic explosive movement, what you didn’t see a lot of throughout his tape was physicality and stack and shed in the box to make plays in the run game, and that is what will likely keep him off the field early in his career in base defenses in normal down and distance situations.
OTHER NOTES
Cooper played four years at Texas A&M after coming out of high school in Louisiana as four-star recruit. He became a starter in 2022 and in 2023 was a consensus First Team All-American.
In 2023, Cooper was consistently deployed as a spy versus a mobile QB. In Texas A&M man coverage concepts, Cooper matched up to running backs and TE. Cooper lined up in the box (the high percentage of his snaps) and outside the box, depending on the defensive call and the offensive formation – Cooper had an outstanding game versus LSU, where you saw all of his explosive traits.

Texas HC sent Arch Manning a message after bad scrimmage
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian needs Arch Manning to keep improving before the team's season opener against Ohio State on Aug. 30. In his first season as the starter, Manning is set to lead the No. 1 Longhorns into a tough battle on the road against No. 3 Ohio State. During Saturday's scrimmage, the defense dominated Manning and the offense for most of the practice. The redshirt sophomore had trouble behind a struggling offensive line. On Monday, Sarkisian told the media that he talked to Manning after the scrimmage about a few missed plays he believes could have been made. “I think when we visited with Arch coming out of Saturday, there was probably five or six plays that I’m very confident he’s going to make as we move forward,“ Sarkisian said, via Wescott Eberts of Burnt Orange Nation. “He didn’t do anything catastrophically bad, but I just know what he’s capable of, and so we’ve just got to keep tightening the screws to make sure that he’s performing the way he’s capable of performing." Saturday's practice is a reminder of a couple of things. One, it may take a few weeks in the regular season for Manning to ease into being the starting quarterback. Two, Manning cannot mask all of the Longhorns' problems, and the offensive line is going to need to do their part if they want a chance at the national championship. As the preseason No. 1 team in the country, the expectations for Texas and Manning are extremely high. The Longhorns might eventually prove that they're the best team, but they might not look like it during the first quarter in Columbus.
Brewers' Quinn Priester tells the truth after escaping loss in comeback vs. Mets
The Milwaukee Brewers looked as though their hot stretch was going to end on Sunday, when the New York Mets jumped to a 5-0 lead. It was certainly not one of Quinn Priester’s best starts, as the right-handed hurler allowed six earned runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) while recording only two strikeouts and issuing a walk across 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. It was an especially frustrating individual performance for Priester, considering how great he was in a previous start. Last Monday, Priester went seven innings long and gave up just an earned run on two hits in a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on the road. That was his 10th straight pitching win, and the streak appeared to be on the verge of getting broken in the Mets game. Fortunately for Priester, Milwaukee’s bats came alive just in time to secure another team victory — and keep Priester’s streak going. Priester speaks up on Brewers’ thrilling win against the Mets The Brewers managed to pull off a come-from-behind 7-6 victory, capped by a solo, walk-off home run by rookie sensation Isaac Collins. “It’s indescribable,” Priester said after giving up a season-high 11 hits (h/t Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). “They definitely made up for a lot of my miscues today, but it’s a team game. I love being a part of this team, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to smile right now.” On the season, Priester is 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 22 appearances (17 starts). The Brewers have now won their last three series via sweeps, and they will look to keep it going with a three-game set coming up against the National League Central division cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates at home.
Former crew chief frustrated by the 'ridiculous' racing at Watkins Glen
It is no secret that NASCAR's current road-course package has not been very good. Aside from the mile-and-a-half tracks that were once the least competitive and exciting in the series, those races are the rare bright spot for the Next Gen Car since its inception in 2022. Shane van Gisbergen drove away to an 11.1-second win over Christopher Bell in Sunday's race at Watkins Glen and set multiple records in the process. While the racing was not particularly exciting, that was not what left former crew chief and current analyst Steve Letarte frustrated the most following the weekend. A recurring issue in each race over the weekend was drivers utilizing the runoff areas around the track and not staying on the traditional racing surface, which ultimately led to some crashes in Saturday's Xfinity race. "So, I hate track limits that have to be officiated," Letarte said on "Inside the Race." "Because I like tracks that you should just stay on the track. I didn't think it mattered. Now, I am team get-them-back-on-the-race-track-at-Watkins-Glen. I don't love the Watkins Glen that I see. ... I think Turn 1 is not as great of a corner with no exit respect or responsibility. You just blow the exit. I think the carousel is a much easier corner, being able to just go driver's left. "I also think Turn 6 is going — let me add, that I think the (Connor) Zilisch, SVG wreck between the last two corners (in the Xfinity Series race) happened because they left the track, and the Austin Hill wreck with Michael McDowell happened off the race track. Now, both could have been avoided, we can talk about who's at fault. What I'm saying is, I've never driven a lap at Watkins Glen. I can analyze what happens between the white lines." This comes one year after rumble strips were placed in Turn 1 to keep drivers from using the runoff area, and that clearly has not worked. As the field has got closer together, using up all the track has become a common way for drivers to establish momentum, especially as they prepare for the right-hander going into The Esses at Watkins Glen. The bottom line is NASCAR's road-racing product needs to get better and Letarte wants to see race cars "stay on the race track because I think it will be a better race." Van Gisbergen's historic dominance certainly does not help, but the overall road course product is not great. Whether NASCAR makes some changes to the runoff areas and enforces track limits remains to be seen, but that still may not be the biggest issue if the racing does not improve.

Milwaukee Brewers Andrew Vaughn receives wild MVP endorsement
There’s no question the Milwaukee Brewers have gotten more than they expected from Andrew Vaughn, a player they acquired largely due to Aaron Civale’s trade request and Vaughn’s slow start with the Chicago White Sox. What looked like a change-of-scenery move has turned into a major win for Milwaukee. Since Vaughn debuted for the Brew Crew on July 7, replacing the injured Rhys Hoskins, Milwaukee has gone 24-4 and Vaughn has posted video game-like numbers. Over that stretch, he has the sixth highest batting average in MLB at .347, sixth best OPS at 1.055, and the second most RBI’s with 32. His incredible play has one MVP voter giving him an endorsement to be in top 10 consideration for the award at the end of the season. Milwaukee Brewers Andrew Vaughn receives wild MVP endorsement Baseball Columnist Bob Nightengale recently posted on X that Vaughn had inserted himself in the top 10 MVP discussions. As incredible as Vaughn has been over the past five weeks, it’s hard to justify that he is truly in consideration for MVP. His season numbers include a .243/.288/.421 slash line with 13 home runs and 51 RBI. While Vaughn has undeniably been a key contributor for the Brewers and exceeded expectations since arriving in Milwaukee, labeling him an MVP candidate is a stretch. He’s become a valuable everyday presence, but his performance doesn’t stack up with the league’s true MVP frontrunners.
