After finishing 4-8 in Deion Sanders’ first season as head coach in 2023, Colorado became one of the most active teams in the transfer portal, landing 44 commitments and the nation’s second-ranked transfer class, according to On3.
The team that Sanders inherited went 1-11 in 2022 while he was still coaching at Jackson State. Accompanied by his son Shedeur Sanders and future Heisman Trophy-winner Travis Hunter, improving to 4-8 in 2023 was a big step forward.
But plenty of weaknesses, including on an offensive line that allowed 56 sacks – the second most in the country – forced Sanders to make some drastic moves. As a result, Colorado saw 45 players leave Boulder in the transfer portal.
One of whom was tight end Chamon Metayer, who never actually played a game for Colorado. Metayer transferred to Colorado from Cincinnati in December 2023, right after Sanders completed his first season. He went through winter workouts and spring ball but transferred to Arizona State in April of 2024. Last season, he helped the Sun Devils reach the College Football Playoff with 306 yards and five touchdowns.
On Friday afternoon in Tempe, Metayer shared a message to his Instagram story ahead of his final college season. That same night, his former team Colorado suffered a 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech.
“Last first game tomorrow ” Metayer wrote. “Just wanna thank everyone who’ve been with me on this journey. It’s on the floor tomorrow full display. Love my bruddas let’s rock out❤️”
Metayer and No. 11 Arizona State open the season against Northern Arizona on Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET in Tempe. Quarterback Sam Leavitt will keep a strong connection with wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who eclipsed 1,000 yards last season. ASU also added Alabama transfer Jaren Hamilton and Fresno State's Jalen Moss. With all five of Metayer’s touchdowns last season coming inside the 25-yard line, offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo is expected to make him a key red-zone option.
A three-star recruit in the class of 2021, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound tight end recorded 258 yards and five touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2022 at Cincinnati.
