After three years of Quinn Ewers at quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, it’s finally time for the Arch Manning era.
The 2025 season should be an exciting one for Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns, who are coming off a College Football Playoff appearance where they reached the semifinal before losing to Ohio State.
Now entering Manning’s first season as the starter, expectations are high in Austin. This will be Manning’s third year in college, making him eligible to go pro after the season. Many in the draft community already view him as a top quarterback prospect. But not everyone is sold on the hype—one former SEC quarterback remains skeptical.
“I am not sold, like so many other people are, that this guy is going to be the number one pick in the NFL Draft, that he’s going to be unbelievable, that he’s going to be the next coming of Peyton and Eli, but mobile too,” former Georgia QB Aaron Murray said recently. “I said this last year during the season too, because I was a big fan of Quinn Ewers heading into the year.”
“If you are so good… why in the hell are you not playing above a 7th round QB?”@aaronmurray11 told @ESPNDari why he’s not as high on Texas QB Arch Manning as others.

Manning sat behind Ewers for a second straight season last year, though he did appear in 10 games, throwing nine touchdown passes to just two interceptions. He completed 68 percent of his passes for 939 yards and started a couple of games while Ewers was sidelined with injury.
Murray’s main concern: If Manning is truly elite, why didn’t he start over Ewers, who was selected in the final round of the 2025 NFL Draft?
“If you are so good, and everyone has you projected as the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, why the hell are you not playing ahead of a seventh round quarterback?”
Texas opens the season in Columbus against Ohio State, and Manning will be tested right out of the gate. The time has come for the next Manning to step into the spotlight—he now has the chance to prove doubters like Murray wrong, or confirm their concerns.
