While the Wisconsin Badgers may have lost on the field to the Maryland Terrapins, the program may continue to lose off of the field with injuries.

Entering the Big Ten Conference opener against Maryland, Wisconsin was notably without starting center Jake Renfro, starting safety Preston Zachman, and starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was listed as questionable. Edwards Jr. would go on to play the game, but the Badgers were unable to maintain a healthy environment for the quarterback on the field as Edwards Jr. would later leave with an aggravated knee.

The injuries suffered before the game and the injury to the starting quarterback Edwards Jr. would not be the only ones that Wisconsin would suffer, however, with injuries plaguing the game. Injuries have been difficult for Wisconsin to escape, with back-up quarterbacks playing the last three seasons and some notable names like Renfro being repeat offenders.

Wisconsin Badgers Suffer Multiple Injuries Against Maryland Terrapins

The first injury that occurred was starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. again coming off of the field with soreness in his knee. Edwards Jr. suffered a knee injury during camp, then injured himself against Miami (OH), and now apparently has again injured himself by pushing his knee too soon. The quarterback entered the week as a questionable game-time decision, and now the decision to play the quarterback could come back to haunt the Badgers.

Another injury that occurred could be something to watch closely especially after Edwards Jr. injury as Danny O’Neil went down in the fourth-quarter. O’Neil is currently the back-up to Edwards Jr. and the quarterback has been starting in the absence of the Maryland transfer. O’Neil took multiple big hits throughout the game until one hit eventually led to the quarterback hitting the ground awkwardly.

Third-string quarterback Hunter Simmons had to come into the game and finish off the final offensive drive for Wisconsin. Simmons entered the game without a key player to lean on as starting running back Dilin Jones suffered an injury and did not return to play. Jones has not been the most productive player on the field for the Badgers so far, but the running back is the most talented player Wisconsin has in the backfield and missing the running back for an extended period of time would be difficult.

Moving forward, the Wisconsin Badgers will need to focus on getting healthy and playing games in the future at 100%. Previously, players had been playing with different dings and nicks which is not a good recipe for winning games. Wisconsin needs to find temporary solutions and take as much time as needed to make sure the stars of the team are healthy.
