LSU adds depth at QB position with major change

The LSU Tigers made an interesting change and have bolstered their quarterback depth as a result.

Athlete Ju’Juan Johnson, who played in the defensive secondary and running back last season at LSU, is now listed as a quarterback as the Tigers prepare for the upcoming spring practices, per the team's official roster

The LSU quarterback room could use the depth. In January, redshirt freshman Colin Hurley was injured in a car crash. At the time, his family released a statement saying they are "are confident that Colin will make a full recovery from this terrible accident." LSU also has returning starter Garrett Nussmeier and Mississippi State transfer QB Michael Van Buren on its depth chart.

In 2024 as a first-year starter, Nussmeier was a 4,000-yard passer with 29 touchdowns and is entrenched as QB1 this season. But it is good to have options.

Enter Johnson, who played the position at an elite level in high school.

As a four-year starter at Lafayette Christian Academy in Lafayette, Louisiana, Johnson passed for over 10,000 yards and 117 touchdowns. In addition, Johnson added 4,000 career rushing yards and another 54 TDs on the ground.

Adding depth is always a plus, but the Tigers could benefit from Johnson’s athleticism.

Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan should look to draw up plays in certain game situations to take advantage of Johnson’s skills in throwing and running the football and keep opposing defenses off-balance.

A converted DB/RB running quarterback drills in spring practice and beyond is something that LSU fans and the media will be keeping an eye on.

LSU opens the 2025 college football season on Aug. 30 on the road at ACC champion Clemson.
