Michigan fills offensive coordinator position with surprising hire of former head coach
Mickey Welsh / Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Michigan Wolverines have zeroed in on their next offensive coordinator hire, per reports. According to CBSSports's Matt Zenitz, the Wolverines are hiring former Troy head coach and current North Carolina offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey to serve as their next offensive coordinator.

The Wolverines fired former OC Kirk Campbell a full week ago after a dismal 2024 campaign.

Michigan finished 128th in total offense (below Purdue), 112th in scoring, and 129th in passing offense. The Wolverines had a revolving door at quarterback and a poor offensive line all season, but that doesn't change the results in any way.

Over his career, Lindsey has coached NFL quarterbacks like Drake Maye and Nick Mullens. He's coached under Todd Monken and Guz Malzahn in his career at Southern Miss and both Auburn and UCF. Now he's being asked to lead the charge in developing prized recruit Bryce Underwood.

This season, the Tar Heels finished 37th in total offense with 423.4 yards per game, 35th in scoring at 32.3 points per game, and 31st in rushing offense (189.5) this year. The Tar Heels were tied for 32nd at 4.86 yards per rush. Very quietly, North Carolina finished 39th in EPA/Play and 34th in Yards/Play, although that was led behind a stellar run game instead of a robust passing game.

This one is a fairly surprising one. I don't know if anyone will actually credit Lindsey for the development of Drake Maye, so his "development" history is rather shallow. Underwood is the kind of player you want to hit right away with an experienced and talented coach, but nothing about Lindsey's profile suggests he's that kind of a coach.

We'll see how this one turns out, but it feels like a bit of a letdown, given Michigan's ability to get potentially anyone in the country they wanted.
