The Michigan Wolverines didn't make a lot of moves in the transfer portal at wide receiver, but they did make one big splash when they added Indiana transfer Donaven McCulley. All offseason long, we heard how McCulley was the only serious receiving threat that had emerged for the Wolverines throughout camp.
Despite this, Michigan's passing game wasn't consistent in their ability to feature him as a receiver. McCulley had a combined nine targets against Central Michigan and Nebraska, finishing with six catches and 75 yards with zero touchdowns. The lack of a threat on the perimeter allowed defenses to load the box and stuff the run. Reliability has been hard to come by in Michigan's wide receiver room, as the unit already has 14(!) drops on the season.
Against Wisconsin, however, Michigan remembered that McCulley is their most talented receiver and finally unlocked their passing game, giving the Wolverines enough of an offense to overcome the Badgers at home 24-10. McCulley snapped a Michigan cold streak as well this week, and might have forced future defensive coordinators to respect what he, and the Wolverines, can do through the air.
In their 24-10 win over Wisconsin, Donaven McCulley became the first Michigan wide receiver to record a 100-yard game since Roman Wilson in November of 2023, finishing the day with 112 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.
McCulley became the featured perimeter threat for the Wolverines' offense, and Wisconsin struggled to contain him. He made several key plays on the outside, including a toe-tap catch on the sideline that was #SCTop10 Worthy and provided a spark that Michigan rode for the rest of the game.
Combined with true freshman Andrew Marsh's breakout game, and the Wolverines finally seem like they have a reliable 1-2 punch at wide receiver, something they'll need for the rest of the season, especially with a massive matchup against the USC Trojans looming large next week. If McCulley and Marsh can continue delivering, Bryce Underwood's confidence should continue to build, helping him become the passing threat Michigan was hoping he could become.
