The Ohio State Buckeyes entered the 2025 season as the No. 3 team in the AP Top 25 college football rankings and took down the nation's No. 1 team, the Texas Longhorns, 14-7 on Saturday in Columbus.
It was a tightly contested game, and Texas actually had a chance to tie it up at 7-7 in the third quarter, but Arch Manning failed to punch it into the end zone from the one-yard line, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Caleb Downs, considered the best defender in college football, recorded five tackles. He showed why he's so highly regarded on Texas' final play – reading the short crosser, reacting instantly, and stopping tight end Jack Endries a yard short of the sticks to seal the win.

Ohio State's defense forced one turnover and never allowed Manning to find a rhythm. Texas tallied a respectable 336 yards of total offense, but Ohio State never broke, forcing three turnovers on downs, including two inside the ten-yard line.
Texas played a strong defensive game, holding Sayin to 126 yards and Smith to 43. Actually, Ohio State only put up 203 yards of total offense compared to Texas' 336.
The one thing we know for certain right now is that Texas will not be No. 1 when the updated AP Top 25 rankings are released on Tuesday. Ohio State ranked No. 3 with Penn State at No. 2. The Nittany Lions are hosting Nevada, and they're currently winning 46-3, behind ball carriers Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, members of a running back room that Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports ranked as the best in the country.
However, the Buckeyes are the clear new No. 1 team in college football. But fear not, we'll be treated to the Ohio State vs. Penn State on Nov. 1 when the Big Ten rivals meet in Columbus. Penn State has one serious contender between now and then, and that's a Sept. 27 home game against No. 7-ranked Oregon.
It's a busy Week 1. Here's a look at the remaining games that are sure to have a big impact on the rankings:
Well, that really depends on what happens with Clemson and Notre Dame. Remember, Texas' loss was on the road, and it was a close game. Dropping them anywhere below No. 4 feels a bit excessive to me. If Clemson wins, I think Texas will drop to No. 4, and Clemson will move to No. 3. If Clemson loses, we may see Texas slide only to No. 3.
