The Buckeyes, Hoosiers, Aggies, and Red Raiders are just a few of the teams having great seasons. They are among the 11 of 136 teams left that are still undefeated at the halfway point of the 2025 regular season.
I’m very tempted to have Indiana jump up here. I just have to keep to my criteria of no one jumping a team in front of them that didn’t lose. This is the first time I’ve ever been glad that Ohio State doesn’t play Indiana, but they may meet in the Big Ten title game if they both keep winning. As good as the Buckeyes have been on defense, it still feels like they haven’t reached their full potential for this season on offense. They could be scary if they do. They play hapless Wisconsin next week.
I ranked BYU #14 to start the season. Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, SMU, Illinois, Arizona State, Oregon, Georgia, Clemson, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Texas were all ahead of them, and all of them have a loss, while BYU doesn’t. Being undefeated matters, even at the halfway point of the season. BYU may fall next week to their rival, Utah, but they have kept their record undefeated, while only 10 other teams have, and 125 others have not. That alone is worthy enough to keep them ahead of the others.
The ‘Canes have this week off after having gone undefeated in a solid early schedule. They’ll be back in action when they host Louisville on Friday, October 17th.
What Curt Cignetti has done at Indiana is more historical than most people realize. Indiana was a terrible program with a few exceptional seasons for a very long time. Now, they’ve made the College Football Playoff and are one of the best teams in the best conference in the country. It’s not hyperbole to say it’s like if the Cincinnati Bengals won the Super Bowl. They’re on track to just keep winning and add a possible Heisman trophy to their rise to dominance.
Navy is one of 11 undefeated teams remaining in the FBS of 136. They are leading one of the top five best conferences out of nine (and whatever the Pac-2 is). It is ridiculous that the AP and Coaches Polls voters don’t have them ranked. I know I likely have them too high, but one reason I do is because I want to give them the respect that the mainstream sports media isn’t. They have legit stars in Blake Horvath and Eli Heidenreich and a real shot to make the College Football Playoff.
Mike Elko, Marcel Reed, and Mario Craver have Texas A&M playing as the best team in the SEC this season. They have a pair of road games against rivals that should allow them to further prove that the Aggies program has stepped up a level. The first is a layup at Arkansas. The second is at Death Valley and LSU. If they can win against Notre Dame in South Bend, they should be able to beat LSU in Baton Rouge.
Miami is rightly all the talk in the ACC, but a team they had an insane meltdown against in 2023, and had their undefeated season crushed by in 2024, is breathing down their necks. Haynes King has become the biggest villain the ‘Canes have dealt with since Cie Grant. King is a Heisman candidate, and Georgia Tech is on track for the ACC Championship.
While I have BYU ranked higher, Texas Tech may be the best team in the Big 12. Their matchup at Arizona State this week could be big, especially if both teams get their starting quarterbacks to return. Tech can run the ball, too. They ran all over Kansas this past week and have yet to score less than 34 points in a game this season.
I had lowballed Ole Miss all season, and they almost vindicated me by losing at home to Washington State. It was easy to fall into this trap game with Georgia up next. Luckily for the Rebels, they side-stepped that land mine, and will be stronger for it. Georgia will have revenge for last year on their minds, while Lane Kiffin and company will be trying to continue their march to the College Football Playoff.
The Tigers are 17-2 in their past 19 games. They are good, and unlike their fellow American Conference program, Navy, they’re getting some national respect that they very much deserve. They have this week off and will try to get to 7-0 next Saturday against UAB.
The Rebels are in a similar spot as Navy. They should be getting some respect for being among the last 11 undefeated teams standing. UNLV has an awesome offense and are poised to play for the Mountain West championship again this season. They may want to make the most of Dan Mullen’s time in Vegas, as his name is already being mentioned for some larger programs’ coaching vacancies. The Rebels have their biggest game of the regular season this week when they play at Boise State.
The Cavaliers have a bye this week. They’re still above Bama because they beat the one team Alabama didn’t beat, even if the Cavaliers win and the Tide’s loss is looking a lot different every week. Next, they will host a scrappy but inconsistent Washington State team that got crushed by Washington but almost beat Ole Miss.
Alabama got the 27-24 win behind Heisman candidate Ty Simpson. Simpson was 23 of 31 for 200 yards and three touchdowns. They host Tennessee in what could be an SEC shootout this Saturday.
Georgia can’t be responsible for the SEC refs screwing Auburn out of a touchdown late in the first half. Kirby Smart can’t even be blamed for trying to argue he was clapping when he clearly called a timeout. The idiotic refs can be responsible for one of the worst blown calls I’ve ever seen, and buying the bridge, Smart sold them. For Georgia, it’s time to move on to revenge against Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.
Tennessee can score with anyone. If their defense even plays a decent game, they can beat anyone. Joey Aguilar and the Vols are even a threat on the road at Alabama in a big-time rivalry game this Saturday.
Demond Williams is on fire for Washington right now. He had over 500 total yards and four touchdowns in the Huskies’ 38-19 win over Rutgers on Friday night. All of college football will be on their side when they take on the cheaters in Ann Arbor next week. Hopefully, they beat the maize and blue and get some national respect that they deserve.
Nebraska is averaging 41 points per game. That alone is why I’m believing in the Huskers a little bit. They’ll have to prove it every single week, and this week they’ll play Minnesota, a team that has historically given them trouble since joining the Big Ten.
The Bearcats’ offense was slowed a little this week. The good news is the Cats’ defense showed they were up to the job in the 20-11 win. UCF came into the game averaging 36 points per game, and put up 413 yards on Cincinnati. UC, however, would bend but not break, holding them to 25 under their season average. Cincy is a legit threat in the Big 12. They play at 1-5 Oklahoma State next Saturday night. On a side note, I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, and love to see UC playing well, but it is utterly stupid that the AP and Coaches Polls voters have them ranked ahead of a Nebraska team with the same record, THAT BEAT THEM head-to-head.
The Utes’ lone loss was to a top-ten Texas Tech. They seem to have recovered well from that loss and have a great offense behind quarterback Devon Dampier, and they’ll play a good team on the road in the Holy War in Provo against BYU.
USC beat michigan by spreading them out, torching them with speed. The Trojans have their usual good offense, but will still have to prove they can play defense at a high level. They’ll get their chance at rival Notre Dame on Saturday.
LSU’s win over Clemson doesn’t look as good as it did at the start of the season, but they have a chance to get another good win when they play at 5-1 Vanderbilt this week.
USF offense exploded on Friday night for a 63-36 win over previously unbeaten North Texas. The Bulls put up 582 yards of total offense on the Mean Green. One of the best Group of Five teams in the country, they need the unbeaten ones ahead of them to stumble to get the playoff berth.
The Ducks’ best win right now is over Northwestern, since both Oregon and the Wildcats won at Penn State and ended James Franklin’s career. Now they have to rebound by flying to the East Coast to play Rutgers.
The Green Wave are sneaky good and one of the reasons the American is so good this year, and the likely conference to get the Group of Five playoff berth. They host Army this week.
Jeff Brohm and Louisville have a chance to pull a huge upset on Friday in Miami. I had Louisville ranked higher earlier this year, and despite the loss to Virginia, they’re still a very capable team.
