During Bowling Green's matchup against the Arkansas State Red Wolves in the 68 Ventures Bowl, the Falcons connected on a fake punt trick play touchdown that was highlighted on ESPN's Pat McAfee Show.
It turns out this wasn't even your run-of-the-mill fake punt trick play because BGSU trotted out their third-string quarterback, Baron May, instead of their punter on the play.
To add to the "subterfuge," as McAfee called it, May wasn't wearing his regular No. 8 jersey that he had worn all season but was instead wearing No. 18, and the Falcons punter, John Henderson, wears No. 19.
They even had May duplicate the punter's white leg sleeves and the way he tucks his towel. The trick play decision was credited to head coach Scot Loeffler, Bowling Green's head coach since the 2019 season.
McAfee, a former punter, seemed impressed by the team's ability to make the most of what he viewed as a read on how Arkansas State's punt coverage was not pressing the gunners, allowing them a free release.
While the trick play touchdown pass made the score 10-7 in the first quarter, unfortunately for Bowling Green, Arkansas State would go on to win the game, 38-31.
BGSU starting quarterback Connor Bazelak passed for 390 yards and three touchdowns, and the Falcons passed for 433 yards total.
The Falcons finish the season 7-6 with a 6-2 record in conference play. The Red Wolves close out the year with an 8-5 record, their first season with a winning record since 2019.
