There are expectations now at Vanderbilt.
No one's thinking the Commodores will challenge for anything important, but they should be even more competitive, more confident, and even more fun.
It only seems like Diego Pavia has played college football since 1975. Last year, the Vanderbilt quarterback showed just how good he is, taking the program up a notch in a terrific season.
He and his Commodores get a warm-up against the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern before going to Virginia Tech and then South Carolina.

For all the fun and magic from Pavia, it's not like the Vanderbilt offense ripped it up offensively. It averaged under 320 yards per game, and this year it might take a little work to get up to speed, especially on the line.
Also lost in last year's fun was a defense that gave up a ton of yards, struggled on third downs, and ...
The Charleston Southern offense wasn't anything special, and it's not about to start rolling now.
It averaged just 268 yards per game, there were too many turnovers, and coming up with points was like pulling teeth, averaging just 14 points an outing.
The Buccaneers will have a bit of a ground game, but the downfield passing attack will be missing.
The idea here is to sharpen up. There's no worry about a pass rush, so get Pavia comfortable, get him into a groove, and get his timing down. This is the game to take some downfield shots to see what the playmakers can do.
Florida State took it easy on the Buccaneers late last year in a 41-7 win, but they gave up 66 to Clemson two years ago.
It was a better team than last season's 1-11 record would indicate, but there's still a lack of projected firepower. The Vanderbilt lines will be solid - the team will try from jump.
