Watch: Houston completes Hail Mary as time expires for wild win over West Virginia

Houston stunned West Virginia with a Hail Mary on the last play in a wild 41-39 win on Thursday night.

Cougars quarterback Donovan Smith rolled out to his left before delivering a deep ball that was tipped before wide receiver Stephon Johnson miraculously came down with the catch.

The winning score came 12 seconds after the Mountaineers appeared to have made a stunning comeback of their own.

Facing a fourth-and-10 from midfield, West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene connected with wide receiver Hudson Clement for a touchdown that gave the Mountaineers a 39-35 lead.

Overall, the teams combined for 42 points in the fourth quarter.

The victory is Houston's first conference win as a Big 12 member. It lost its first two conference games by an average of 22 points.

It's also huge for head coach Dana Holgorsen, who coached West Virginia from 2011-18. Afterward, he perfectly summed up the emotional whiplash of the final minute.

Instead of licking its wounds over a frustrating defeat, Houston is celebrating an improbable win. The Cougars experienced a wide range of emotions on Thursday, ending the night with an exhilarating high.
