Cougars quarterback Donovan Smith rolled out to his left before delivering a deep ball that was tipped before wide receiver Stephon Johnson miraculously came down with the catch.
The winning score came 12 seconds after the Mountaineers appeared to have made a stunning comeback of their own.
Facing a fourth-and-10 from midfield, West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene connected with wide receiver Hudson Clement for a touchdown that gave the Mountaineers a 39-35 lead.

Overall, the teams combined for 42 points in the fourth quarter.
The victory is Houston's first conference win as a Big 12 member. It lost its first two conference games by an average of 22 points.
It's also huge for head coach Dana Holgorsen, who coached West Virginia from 2011-18. Afterward, he perfectly summed up the emotional whiplash of the final minute.
Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen on the UH-WVU ending: “I don’t think I could have been more mad and more happy in less than a minute.”
