You Won’t Believe Why Arch Manning Is Being Compared to Peyton Manning After Ohio State Loss

The anticipation leading up to Week 1 was palpable for the No. 1 Texas Longhorns, led by former five-star quarterback Arch Manning.

Manning has been the center of attention all offseason, with sky-high expectations. On Saturday against No. 3 Ohio State, however, those expectations were tempered.

The Buckeyes won 14-7, and Texas didn’t score until after midway through the fourth quarter, producing a less-than-stellar offensive performance from Manning.

He finished 17 of 30 passing for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while rushing 10 times for 38 yards. On throws between 10–20 yards, he completed just 20%, and for 0–9 yard attempts, he completed 59%.

"We beat ourselves a lot and that starts with me and I've gotta play better for us to win," Manning said after the loss.

Despite the rough outing, comparisons were drawn to his uncle, NFL legend Peyton Manning, who faced a similar challenge in his first collegiate start against a top-10 opponent.

In Peyton’s first season at Tennessee against No. 10 Alabama, he completed 10 of 18 passes for 138 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

"Arch isn’t the only Manning to struggle in a first career start against a top-10 team," the post read. "Arch will be fine."

Fans had mixed reactions to the comparisons being drawn between the two Mannings.

"Peyton was a true freshman, no? Arch is a junior. There has to be better expectations for a junior who has had two years in the system," a fan said.

Someone else added, "This graphic means absolutely nothing but I do think Arch will be fine. Thought Sark would have done things differently but they will adjust."

Another person wrote, "Spin it all you can but I saw what I saw and there isn’t a stat or comparison in the world that will change my mind that Arch was bad. Only Arch can do that in the next 11 games."

"Greatness awaits," one more fan commented.

There are certainly discrepancies in the comparison. Arch Manning is technically a junior, having redshirted his freshman season, while Peyton Manning was a true freshman when he started at Tennessee.

That said, Peyton, who also struggled in his rookie NFL season, went on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. While that doesn’t guarantee the same outcome for Arch, there’s no reason to hit the panic button after just one game.

Arch and the Longhorns have a prime opportunity over the next three weeks to get back on track before their road trip against the Florida Gators.

Texas will face San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston State over the next three weeks, all at their home stadium in Austin.
