England captain Brendon McCullum confirmed Jacob Bethell is completely fit and available for selection when England take on New Zealand in their first Test of a 3-match series starting on Thursday at Lord's.
Bethell recently flew home from his stint at the IPL 2026 winning side Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he was examined by England team medics. He had been the subject of much attention regarding fitness going into the series with the Kiwis but McCullum has removed all doubts about the availability of the youngster.
Mc Cullum on Tuesday confirmed Bethell came through training at gully
McCullum added :
" Bethell is absolutely fine so there are no problems there. He should be able to bowl as well which is quite handy for us to have another bowling option in the top order"
This fitness update comes as good news for England as they prepare to face New Zealand in a crucial home Test series.
Bethell has quickly gone on to become one of England's bright young talents and one of the only positives during England's humiliating 4-1 defeat in Australia where he finished the series strongly scoring a century against the Australians at Sydney.
The left hander has played 6 Test matches and averages 43 in the longer format so far. He has impressed England coaches and he is elevated up the order from number 6 and will come in at number 3 above Ollie Pope.
However despite his recent performances he is still relatively inexperienced in first class cricket as he has played just 1 Test match in England and even then he was at No 6 where he was dismissed for 6 and 5 against India last year.
According to reports from the BBC, Bethell has played just one county cricket match since August 2014 which means that compared with many he is going into the series with much less cricket under his belt.
However despite these thoughts on his relative inexperience in first class cricket, McCullum does have faith in Bethell and his mentality.
The coach declared that "no excuses" would be acceptable from Bethell this summer as he prepares to take an increased role in England's squad.
McCullum Said :
"His game looks in good order. I am sure working in India I know it is probably not ideal from a structure point of view and maybe not getting as many red ball matches under his belt, but he has a calm head and he is a very methodical preparer in terms of the mental side of the game".
England will hope Bethell can continue the form from the Ashes and in a new number 3 position with the backing of the coaching staff the youngster has a major opportunity to impress against New Zealand at Lord's.
His fitness and selection provide England with another excellent option as they look to start their Test campaign on home soil against the Kiwis with a victory.
