Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson has been drafted into England’s squad for the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Manchester. He replaces off-spinner Shoaib Bashir who has been ruled out of the series following a fracture to a finger on his left hand.

Dawson, 35, last played a Test for England in July 2017 against South Africa. He has consistently delivered the goods for Hampshire in the last two years, earning the PCA Player of the Year award in both 2023 and 2024. He has played only three Tests so far and has seven wickets to his credit.

Meanwhile, bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have returned to their respective counties to feature in the County Championship.

Luke Wright, England Men’s National Selector, said that Dawson has earned his spot in the side. “Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire.”

Squad: Ben Stokes (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes
