Delhi Capitals' bowler Lungi Ngidi was discharged from the hospital and has returned to the team hotel after the frightening injury he suffered while playing in the IPL 2026 clash between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in New Delhi.

During their IPL match which was being held on April 25 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the opposition were chasing the monumental target of 265. It started like any other attempt at a catch when Punjab were batting. Lungi Ngidi was fielding at mid-off when Priyansh Arya of Punjab lofted the ball. However he misjudged the height of the ball.

When he tried to move back and take the catch, Ngidi lost his balance and fell heavily to the ground landing on the back of his head. He was left lying motionless which had worried every player on the field of both teams.

Response and hospital update

Immediately after his fall, the players of both sides ran to his aid and showed concerns. Some of the batters of Punjab including Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh were visibly concerned about his condition. The medical team were also rushed to the field and attended to him. A neck brace was placed to immobilise his movement before he was stretchered off and sent to the nearby Karol Bagh hospital.

Fortunately, According to IANS  The latest reports state that Ngidi has been discharged and is back at the DC team hotel.

Stated a few sources:

"Lungi Ngidi is doing well and has now returned to the DC team hotel in New Delhi. Him being sent back to the hotel after being discharged from the hospital is a very positive indication of his recovery, and the franchise medical staff will continue to take good care of him," 

This will be a relief for the fans and teammates given the scary nature of the injury.

In terms of the match itself, the injury had a bit of a ripple effect on the Delhi Capitals as they wanted to send in Dushmantha Chameera as a concussion substitute, however it was not permitted because they had already utilized 4 overseas players in the team which included Ngidi. Thus they had to bring in Vipraj Nigam from the impact substitutes although they already had to use him as he was not a like for like replacement.

At first glance, KL Rahul was looking set to take DC to a record target of over 265. However he did not manage it, but still the Indian had an excellent innings. He ended his innings on a massive 152 runs  the highest individual score by an Indian in the IPL.

He was helped with a quick 91 runs by Nitish Rana as they partnered up for 220 runs to help DC set up a huge total of 264/2. Punjab however made a phenomenal chase and gunned down the target with 6 wickets in hand as they registered the highest successful chase in the IPL and in T20 history.

Even after this remarkable loss to Punjab Kings the biggest positive news is about the recovery of Lungi Ngidi.
