The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined the West Indies team five percent of their match fees following a slow over-rate during the opening ODI against England in Birmingham.
The penalty was handed down by Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, after the West Indies were found to have bowled one over fewer than required once all time allowances had been considered.
According to the ICC’s Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.22, which addresses minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over not completed within the designated timeframe.
West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted responsibility for the shortfall and agreed to the sanction, thereby waiving the right to a formal hearing.
The charge was officially brought forward by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, along with third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd.
England registered a massive 238-run win after posting 400/8 on the board, courtesy of sizzling half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell. In response, the West Indies were bowled out for 162, with Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton scalping three wickets each.
The second match is being played in Cardiff, and the final match will be played at the Oval.
