Former rising Canadian star set for surprise return as MODUS Super Series International Pairs 2 set for August

Dawson Murschell was once regarded as one of Canada's greatest hopes but hasn't really been seen for the past five years at least in PDC tournaments. But he will return to partner Jeff Smith in August in the MODUS Super Series International Pairs.

It is the second edition of the tournament which will be confirmed with new pairs for the next 11 weeks until the tournament begins. Danny van Trijp and Jimmy van Schie won the title two weeks ago in a captivating conclusion which saw them defeat Kurt Parry and Richie Burnett of Wales as Netherlands hoisted the inaugural title.

No doubt the Dutch will return to attempt to defend their title as one of the teams. But darting fans got a surprise with the first pair as Dawson Murschell was part of the Canadian team flanked by Jeff Smith who won this week's MODUS Super Series.

Murschell first appeared on TV back in 2017 when he lost to eventual champion Willard Bruguier in the North American Championship. He then lost to Gerwyn Price after a stunning win over James Wade which saw him captured into the public conscious.

He won his Tour Card at 2018 underlying the promise of the player known as 'Awesome Dawson'. His first months on the Pro Tour were relatively difficult, though. In 2018, he also participated in the North American Championship again, but this time he lost in the semi-finals. At the US Darts Masters, however, he again provided a shock again, this time Gerwyn Price had to lose 6-2 in the opening round. Once again, however, the quarter-finals were his end point after an 8-5 defeat against Gary Anderson.

But he competed in the World Cup of Darts for the next two years in 2018 and 2019 as the second ranked Canadian on both occasions. He hilariously created a viral moment where he did the floss (remember that) and John Part danced alongside him on stage. They won 5-1 against Italy but then lost 2-0 to Japan. They beat Italy again in 2019 as he saw off the side with Jim Long. They sensationally beat Australia 2-0 then he beat Michael van Gerwen individually 4-2 in a superb win. But they lost 2-1 to the side.

He confirmed in 2020 that he would be not attempting to win his Tour Card back. He did return in 2023 to darts by winning the Klondike Open and has kept his arm in with WDF tournaments here or there. But will this herald the return of the now 29-year-old? Time will tell.
