The World Matchplay in Blackpool stands as one of the most prestigious events on the darts calendar—an elite battleground that not only showcases top talent but also serves as a true barometer of the world’s best players. Entry is reserved strictly for the top 16 in the PDC Order of Merit, along with the top 16 performers from the Pro Tour rankings, making qualification alone a hallmark of consistency and excellence.
To appear in the World Matchplay year after year is, by itself, a testament to a player's standing at the sport’s highest level. Few embody that sustained success better than James Wade, who will mark his 20th consecutive appearance at the Winter Gardens this year.
Wade, the left-handed maestro, made his Blackpool debut back in 2006 and hasn’t missed a single edition since. Over nearly two decades, he has carved out an impressive record at the iconic venue. He reached the final in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2015—lifting the trophy only once, in 2007.
With this milestone, Wade equals the remarkable streak of Steve Beaton, who qualified for 20 consecutive Matchplay events between 1998 and 2020. Only Phil Taylor surpasses them both, having appeared in 24 straight tournaments from 1994 to 2017. Taylor’s dominance in Blackpool is legendary, with 16 World Matchplay titles to his name. In tribute, the tournament trophy now bears his name—the Phil Taylor Trophy.
Elsewhere, Gary Anderson continues his own run of consistency, gearing up for his 17th appearance, which brings him level with Dennis Priestley and Ronnie Baxter. Adrian Lewis’s streak ended at 16 appearances, while Dave Chisnall draws even with Colin Lloyd on 15. Three-time Matchplay champion Michael van Gerwen is set to make his 14th consecutive appearance, continuing his legacy at the Winter Gardens.
As the sport continues to evolve, longevity at the top becomes ever more elusive. Yet, for players like James Wade, it remains the hallmark of a truly exceptional career.
