The Netherlands continue to impress at the World Cup of Darts. Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen demolished Scotland with a stunning 8–0 victory. After three matches, the Dutch duo have still not dropped a single leg. Up next: a quarter-final clash with the Czech Republic.
The Dutch pair became the first team at this year’s tournament to average over 100 in a match, showcasing their class in style. Scotland, represented by former world champions Gary Anderson and Peter Wright, were completely outplayed.
“What a feeling,” said Noppert. “I want to give a lot of credit to Gian—he played phenomenal. I’m so happy to have a partner like him. Scotland didn’t play their best, but we also had the advantage of already playing two matches in the past couple of days.”
“That really was a massive advantage,” Van Veen added. “It was very close between us and Northern Ireland for that fourth seed. But I actually said back then that maybe it’s better to go through the group stage—you get more match rhythm and you’re already used to the stage and the conditions.”
“I feel really good up there with Danny,” continued the 23-year-old from Poederoijen. “He gives me a lot of confidence. I’d never beaten Gary or Peter in a singles match before, and that was playing on my mind. But Danny really took the pressure off me.”
After three matches, the Netherlands have now won 16 straight legs—without losing a single one. “I joked about it with Danny before the match,” said Van Veen, “but I honestly didn’t think we’d still be saying that after playing Scotland.”
Following England’s shock early exit, the Netherlands’ chances of winning the title are looking better than ever.
“Oh, but we already believed we could win this from the start,” said Noppert. “We know what we’re capable of.”
