These 22 film actors have never starred on a TV show

Most actors will take any work they can get. For some, that doesn't include television.

1 of 22

Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet
Timothée Chalamet Searchlight Pictures

Timothée Chalamet still has many years ahead of him - plenty of time to star on television if he wants. But he's only done TV a few times, making it very clear that film acting is his preference.

2 of 22

Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson The Producer Circle Company

Jack Nicholson did some work in television early in his career, but he hasn't done any small screen work since the late '60s (unless you count commercials). That man is a film star if there ever were one. Just ask his three Oscars.

3 of 22

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman Cross Creek Pictures

Natalie Portman has been working in Hollywood for decades, and she’s got enough money and prestige to afford to take on only projects she cares about. Portman must not care too much about TV because she’s only entered that world a handful of times, and never for more than two episodes.

Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson Marvel Studios

Scarlett Johansson has had a similar acting path to Natalie Portman. She’s done some voice-over work for television and even played herself in an episode of Entourage, but the Oscar nominee mostly sticks to movies. The only series she’s appeared in more than two episodes in are Robot Chicken and Saturday Night Live.

5 of 22

Willem Dafoe

Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe Hemdale Film Corporation

Willem Dafoe has mastered the art of film. The famed actor has been nominated for four Oscars. But he won’t take his talents to television, and he never has. The actor known for projects like Spider-Man and At Eternity’s Gate has said that he only wants to work with one director at a time.

6 of 22

Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage Hollywood Pictures

Not only has Nicolas Cage never starred on television, but he’s literally never acted in a series. Cage is one of the very rare actors whose entire career has been defined by film. He has starred in a few made-for-TV movies, but we’re guessing that if Cage were to have a say, he’d reject the notion that he’s been on TV.

7 of 22

Javier Bardem

Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem Columbia Pictures

Javier Bardem took some television work at the beginning of his career, but none were ever starring roles. Eventually, he found his footing in movies, and it was clearly where he was meant to be as he earned an Oscar for his work in No Country for Old Men.

Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson Temple Hill Entertainment

Robert Pattinson is another actor who’s never been on television in any capacity (except the Twilight films airing on TV). Aside from his massive work in the Twilight franchise and his turn as Batman, Pattinson has done mostly independent films, staying away from anything too mainstream.

Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter UK Film Council

Helena Bonham Carter’s career has been mostly movies, with her roles in films like Fight Club and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street among her most notable. The actress did play Princess Margaret in quite a few episodes of The Crown, but it wasn’t a starring role.

10 of 22

Christian Bale

Christian Bale
Christian Bale Edward R. Pressman Productions

Very, very early in his career, Christian Bale had roles in a couple of television series. But since 1989, his on-screen work has consisted solely of films. American Psycho, The Dark Knight, The Big Short, and Vice have been among his most notable roles.

11 of 22

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt Columbia Pictures

Brad Pitt has acted in a few television series throughout his career, but he’s never starred in a program. Pitt’s involvement with television hasn’t been quite as scant as it seems, though —the celebrated actor has served as an executive producer for a number of series in the past.

12 of 22

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie Relativity Media

Like her ex-husband, Angelina Jolie just loves film. While she’s stepped foot on a couple of TV sets, she’s kept her career focused on movies, even diving into the writing, producing, and directing side of the craft.

13 of 22

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise TriStar Pictures

A movie star through and through, Tom Cruise is another actor who’s literally never done any acting work on TV, although he did try. Once things took off for him, he kept his focus mainly on high-grossing action films like Mission: Impossible films and Top Gun. Cruise did direct an episode of the TV series Fallen Angels, though.

14 of 22

Judy Garland

Judy Garland
Judy Garland Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Television wasn’t quite as popular in Old Hollywood as it is now, so it’s less surprising that iconic actors from that era didn’t act on TV, but Judy Garland had a long career. She probably could’ve starred in a television series if she had wanted to, but she never even garnered credit for the medium.

15 of 22

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn Paramount Pictures

Audrey Hepburn never starred in television, either. The famed actress did act in a few episodes of series here and there, but her legacy will remain as a celebrated movie star, known for hits like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady

16 of 22

Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando Paramount Pictures

Marlon Brando had a long enough career that he could’ve starred in a television series if he wanted to. Understandably, though, Brando stayed in movie land. He did technically star in The Godfather Saga miniseries for television, but that was just the first two installments of The Godfather re-edited for TV.

17 of 22

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe 20th Century Fox

Known for projects like Some Like It Hot and The Seven Year Itch, Marilyn Monroe only ever starred in films. She appeared in a couple of episodes of the comedy series The Jack Benny Program, but otherwise, she stayed on movie sets. Had her life not met such a tragic end, perhaps she would’ve ventured into television.

18 of 22

Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix
Joaquin Phoenix Annapurna Pictures

If you’d asked Joaquin Phoenix where he saw things going at the beginning of his career, he might’ve said television acting. The actor found work on several series when he was just getting started, but eventually, his time on TV waned, and since the late ‘80s, he’s only worked in film.

19 of 22

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart Columbia Pictures

Kristen Stewart has done television, but she’s never starred in anything. She’s been too busy starring as a girl who wants to become a vampire and Princess Diana to engage in television.

20 of 22

Matt Damon

Matt Damon
Matt Damon Kennedy/Marshall

Matt Damon has appeared in the occasional television series, like 30 Rock and Entourage, but most of his acting work has been in movies. The famous actor does have a variety of executive producer credits for TV series, though, such as City on a Hill and The Runner

21 of 22

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz 20th Century Fox

Cameron Diaz pretty much sticks to cinema, too. And seeing as she’s been in and out of retirement for the past several years, it doesn’t seem too likely that she will commit to starring in a television series soon. But she will be in Shrek 5, and that’s all that matters.

22 of 22

Emma Watson

Emma Watson
Emma Watson Warner Bros. Pictures

Emma Watson also has only a couple of television credits. But when the first decade of your career is overwhelmed by one of the biggest book-to-film franchise adaptations ever, you don’t really have time to star in a TV show.

Acacia Deadrick

Acacia Deadrick is a South Dakota-based writer who has written for sites such as Nicki Swift, The List, and Glam. She loves music and all things pop culture, and she can be found watching TV, completing a crossword puzzle, or reading in her spare time.

Troubling news emerges on Bears QB Caleb Williams’ workout with HC Ben Johnson

It might have been a good thing the Chicago Bears didn’t play Caleb Williams on Sunday. The Bears might need to hide their second-year quarterback as he irons out his wrinkles in the pre-snap process and with accuracy issues. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft struggled with timing and accuracy during the Bears’ joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Friday. Caleb Williams was inaccurate in the red zone against no defenders On Sunday, head coach Ben Johnson chose not to play Williams against the Dolphins in the Bears’ first preseason game. Instead, Johnson led a workout with Williams and wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore before the game. Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears ran a total of 87 plays during the workout. All of the plays were routes in the air with no defenders on the field for the scripted practice. Despite going against no defenders bringing pressure or guarding his receivers, Williams struggled to hit his targets in the red zone. "Williams would stand next to Johnson, who would give him the play," Biggs wrote. "Then, the quarterback simulated a huddle with the player (only one ran a route on each snap) and gave the play call. They’d break the huddle, go to the line of scrimmage, Williams would simulate pre-snap actions and then the play would be run… "Before ending the session with eight deep balls, there was a 25-play set of snaps in the red zone. One thing Williams struggled to connect on was out routes to Moore and Odunze near the goal line. Those throws were not close and Williams consistently led the receivers too much." A closed-door problem for the Chicago Bears The throws weren’t close during routes on air… in the red zone… seriously? Williams wasn’t ready to take the field for the preseason game. For all of the flak he’s been getting from practice reports, the quarterback would have been relentlessly mocked for having these issues shown during an NFL Network broadcast. Biggs’ report is troubling, with a month to go before the season. Williams has much to improve upon, and the Bears are very much trying to do so without cameras present for a reason.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely

Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, Calif., in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Dolphins humiliated by Lions at joint practice

Dolphins humiliated by Lions at joint practice

Joint practices have revealed some problems for the Miami Dolphins with a few weeks to go before the regular season. Tua Tagovailoa started against the Chicago Bears in Sunday's preseason game, wanting to show improvement after having a bad showing during the Dolphins' joint practice in Chicago on Friday. Tagovailoa did play better, going 5-of-6 passing for 27 yards and led the Dolphins to the Chicago 1-yard line before the offense was stopped on downs. A few days later, Tagovailoa and the offense had another poor performance at their joint practice with the Detroit Lions. Per Colton Pouncy of The Athletic, Miami couldn't score in the red zone against a motivated Lions defense during Wednesday's practice. "Dolphins offense just ran 16 or so plays in the red zone vs. the Lions and didn’t score until the final play (between the second units)," Pouncy posted on X. "Miami’s first-team offense didn’t score in the 7-8 plays vs. Detroit’s first-team defense. It was ugly. Lions’ D is having a day." Pouncy's observation of the Lions manhandling the Dolphins was universal among beat reporters covering the Lions and Dolphins, with The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner calling it the most "lopsided" practice he'd witnessed covering the NFL. Last week, Omar Kelly of the Miami Sun Sentinel said Miami folded when the Bears defense began to whip on the offense. The accusations of the Dolphins being a soft team are going to continue until they decide to fight back in joint practices or against opponents in the regular season. When healthy, the Lions have a fierce defense. So Detroit having the edge isn't a surprise, though not being able to score during 16 plays in the red zone is a concern. Miami doesn't appear to have found an identity, and that could spell doom for the season if it doesn't get it figured out before Week 1.

King of New York: Pete Alonso breaks major Mets all-time record

Pete Alonso is now the New York Mets' all-time home run king. With his opposite-field, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, Alonso clubbed the 253rd and 254th home runs of his Mets career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the team's all-time list. He moved two home runs ahead of the previous record-holder, Darryl Strawberry, who hit 252 home runs with the team between the 1983 and 1990 seasons. Here is a look at his record-setting home run. Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, Alonso hit his 254th home run: Along with the all-time Mets home run lead, Alonso is also the Mets' single-season home run leader with 53 home runs during the 2019 season. Strawberry congratulated Alonso on breaking his record: His home runs on Tuesday were his 27th and 28th of the season. It is a big deal for Alonso because there was some doubt this past offseason about whether he would have a chance to set this record. Even though he was close, the uncertainty around his future, given his free-agent status, created a lot of questions about where he would play. Ultimately, the Mets re-signed him to a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out clause following the 2025 season. That opt-out will again create some uncertainty about his future, but it is pretty clear Alonso still has a lot of power left in his bat. Whether he returns to the Mets or goes somewhere else, he will remain the franchise's greatest home run hitter for the foreseeable future. He is now on top of the record books for the single season and career.
