20 reboots that actually went right

20 reboots that actually went right

Hollywood is often lazy. It looks at what works in the past, and it tries to replicate its success again (and, sometimes, again and again after that). Oftentimes, these attempts at rehashing the old fail miserably. But once in a while, a modern take on an old idea turns out pretty well. With the reboot of "Tomb Raider" set to hit theaters on March 16, here are 20 examples of reboots that went right.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

Man, J.J. Abrams truly is the master of the reboot, isn't he? Not only did he give us a solid "Star Trek" update, but he also made the world believe that "Star Wars" movies could be good again. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" also gets mad points for proving that you really can have a very successful sci-fi/action franchise with a woman as the main character.

"The Amazing Spider-Man"

"The Amazing Spider-Man"

This might be an unpopular opinion, but Andrew Garfield was a much more charismatic Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire, who was a little too dopey for my liking in the movie. I'm not saying the Andrew Garfield era of the "Spider-Man" franchise is as good as the Tobey Maguire one (it's not). I'm just saying Andrew Garfield was very likable in the 2012 movie.

"V"

"V"

"V," the sci-fi/political drama that premiered in 2009 on ABC after the network lost "Lost," focused on a race of aliens who came to Earth ostensibly in peace – but not really. It was a reboot of a 1983 TV miniseries of the same that was also pretty enjoyable to watch.

"21 Jump Street"

"21 Jump Street"

This 2012 film reboot of the late 1980s TV drama might legitimately be one of the funniest comedies of the decade. That's in large part to Jonah Hill being Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum showing the world that he's a very good-looking dude and very funny.

"Daredevil"

"Daredevil"

Bless Netflix for rebooting "Daredevil" in 2015. The TV series with Charlie Cox playing the titular role is good enough to salvage the character after Ben Affleck threw it in the gutter in the 2003 movie of the same name.

"90210"

"90210"

Like the its predecessor "Beverly Hills, 90210," this CW show followed the lives of rich, attractive, young people and all the drama that said lives entail. Also like its predecessor, it was the right kind of trashy TV watch.

"Twin Peaks"

I know that the 2017 version of "Twin Peaks" is a continuation of the 1990 cult series, but there are tens of millions of adults in their mid-20s who were born when the show first aired. If that doesn't make something a reboot, I don't know what does.

"Blade Runner 2049"

"Blade Runner 2049"

Even if you think it's nowhere near as good as the original (very understandable given that the 1982 movie is a certified classic), Ryan Gosling has proven that he is a great enough actor to take names and kick ass as the next blade runner.

"Wonder Woman"

"Wonder Woman"

Gal Gadot was so good in "Wonder Woman" that the original superhero Lynda Carter gave her mad love. Also, "Wonder Woman" is so fun and enjoyable that it proves there can be such a thing as a well-made and entertaining DC Universe movie.

"The Incredible Hulk"

"The Incredible Hulk"

The 2008 Ed Norton movie rebooted the "Hulk" franchise from the atrocity that was the 2003 Ang Lee film. It's not the best Marvel cinematic universe movie, but it gave us a glimpse of what could have been. Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in 2012's "The Avengers" largely because he didn't really feel like playing the same role for like a decade.

"Battlestar Galactica"

"Battlestar Galactica"

"Battlestar Galactica" is the definition of a reboot gone right. Based on the 1978 series of the same name, "Battlestar Galactica" premiered to much acclaim in 2004 on the SciFi Channel (now SyFy). The series followed the last remaining humans on a series of spaceships looking for a new planet, all while avoiding getting murdered by Cylons, sentient robots whose sole purpose is to kill all humans. Also, it starred Edward James Olmos, and the dude is good in everything he does.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"

The "Planet of the Apes" franchise, which became popular in the 1970s, was originally rebooted in 2001 by acclaimed director Tim Burton. Thankfully, this gross use of a beloved franchise was corrected in 2011 with yet another reboot — one with no association to the Burton fiasco and with James Franco and Andy Serkis (he plays Caesar, an ape). "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was so successful that it's already a trilogy, and a fourth is already slated for production.

"Dredd 3D"

"Dredd 3D"

Sylvester Stallone was one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, but not even he could make a good adaptation of "Judge Dredd," a comic book about a law enforcement officer who also serves as judge, jury and executioner. Fortunately for us, director Pete Travis released his movie version of the comic book in 2012. Called "Dredd 3D," the film followed the titular character (played by a masked Karl Urban) as he destroys an entire high-rise infested with criminals.

"Batman Begins"

"Batman Begins"

Despite being one of the most fascinating and complex characters in literature (yes, comic books are literature and I will fight anyone who says otherwise), the TV and film versions of Batman have always been campy and lacked any real substance. This is especially true of the Joel Schumacher movies ("Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin"). It wasn't until 2005, with the release of Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" and with Christian Bale in the lead, that the character finally got the movie it deserved.

"True Grit"

"True Grit"

Look, you don't get to remake a John Wayne movie unless you really know what you're doing. That's especially true if it's a movie where John Wayne plays an embittered loner cowboy who's trying to do one good act before he dies. Joel and Ethan Coen know what they're doing. In 2011, these two living legends remade "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, the John Wayne role. This movie is so good, you could say it's better than the original and not be wrong.

"Heat"

"Heat"

Did you know that "Heat," the 1995 Michael Mann crime drama that gave us the Al Pacino vs. Robert DeNiro movie we always wanted, was actually a reboot? This movie, which is the most perfect cops-and-robbers film ever made, was previously made as "L.A. Takedown" in 1989. It was a TV movie created by Michael Mann himself. Also, this movie qualifies as a reboot because there's talks of making a prequel to this one.

"Casino Royale"

"Casino Royale"

The James Bond franchise was rebooted once again in 2005 with "Casino Royale," which saw Daniel Craig take the 007 torch. Some would argue that Craig is the best Bond. Maybe. What's definitely true is that this version of "Casino Royale" is better than the 1967 version, which I guess tried to be a comedy with Orson Welles, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen in it.

"Star Trek"

"Star Trek"

J.J. Abrams did such an amazing job rebooting the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009. Think about it: He took a very beloved science fiction entity known for its rabid fan base and he made it accessible without watering it down. Plus, Leonard Nimoy was in it, so how could people not love it?

"X-Men: First Class"

"X-Men: First Class"

"X-Men: First Class" is low key the best "X-Men" movie because the cast in it was just so great and fun. The James McAvoy/Michael Fassbender dynamic as Professor X and Magneto is just fantastic. Also, "X-Men: First Class" saved the franchise after the train wreck that was "X-Men 3," a movie that stole its jokes from the internet (if you don't know what I'm talking about, google "Juggernaut dub").

"Mad Max: Fury Road"

"Mad Max: Fury Road"

Quite possibly the gold standard for modern day reboots, "Mad Max: Fury Road" took a dormant 30-year-old franchise and throttled it for modern audiences with some of the most amazing practical effects work in years. Tom Hardy ably plays the taciturn titlular Max, but Charlize Theron's Furiosa steals the show as the film's preeminent badass.

Dodgers Facing Trade Decision After Blake Snell News

Left-handed starting pitcher Blake Snell is in his tenth major-league season after making his debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016. Snell spent time with the San Diego Padres, then signed a deal with the San Francisco Giants after the 2023 season, which he later opted out of to enter free agency in 2024. The 32-year-old veteran signed a five-year, $182 million contract this offseason with the Los Angeles Dodgers after an exceptional 2024 campaign. Snell earned such a lucrative contract thanks to his outstanding career to date, which includes two Cy Young Awards and an All-Star appearance. Over 213 career starts, he owns a 77–58 record, a 3.18 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts. Snell was placed on the injured list on April 6 (retroactive to April 3) with left shoulder inflammation after experiencing discomfort during a bullpen session; he had made only two starts for the Dodgers before the injury. After four minor-league rehab outings, manager Dave Roberts announced on Sunday that Snell is expected to rejoin the rotation next week. With his return looming, the Dodgers have decided to shift to a six-man rotation but now face a decision on right-hander Dustin May’s roster status. May returned to a full-time starting role for the first time in two seasons and has struggled. On Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, May allowed four runs in five innings of work, and he entered the start with an ERA of 4.73. May’s name has surfaced in trade rumors, and he is a candidate to potentially be moved to the bullpen. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

Kirk Cousins makes notable leadership move after Falcons practice

Kirk Cousins might be relegated to the job of backup quarterback, but he is showing veteran leadership to his Atlanta Falcons teammates. Following Sunday's practice, Cousins pulled aside rookie defensive end James Pearce to encourage the first-round pick after his fourth practice in the league at Flowery Branch, Georgia. "QB Kirk Cousins pulled aside Pearce after practice to compliment him on a pass batted down," wrote Marc Raimondi of ESPN. Cousins reportedly had a solid day of practice on Sunday, going 7-of-12 passing against the first-team unit. If Cousins wants out of Atlanta, he's not showing it at practice. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback is competing on the field and being a good teammate around the facility. Cousins' actions on the field backed up what Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot praised Cousins for before the team's practice on Sunday. “Outside, it's a lot more of a deal than it is in the building,” Fontenot said to the media about the idea of friction between the Falcons and Cousins, per video from D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “He shows up, he does his job, just like anybody ... We've gotta build the best 70-man roster so we can go win games. "That's what we're focused on, and Kirk, just like all the other players, is focused on coming in here and doing their job. That's what he's been doing." Fontenot didn't dismiss the idea that Atlanta would trade Cousins before the season. He said the Falcons will do whatever it takes to make the team better, but stressed that Cousins has been a professional throughout the process of being replaced by Michael Penix Jr., a first-round pick from the 2024 draft. “In terms of making moves, whether it's trades or acquiring players, we're always looking at those factors," Fontenot said. "We're gonna do whatever we can do to make this team the best it can possibly be. But he's been a great professional, and he's handled himself well.” Cousins is coming to work in a manner that will make another owner want to take a chance on the veteran quarterback. That could be one of his best-selling points before he plays in his 13th season in the league.

Can LeBron James Be Traded to the Dallas Mavericks?

Can LeBron James Be Traded to the Dallas Mavericks?

This year’s NBA offseason could see a lightning strike in the near future. The Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus has suggested a new, three-team trade between the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets that would send LeBron James, alongside his son Bronny James, to Dallas in a dramatic, yet significant deal to reshape all three teams’ futures. Here’s why. LeBron James to the Dallas Mavericks LeBron James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 NBA season. However, James’ decision was met with skepticism by several NBA executives. Some NBA insiders expected James, 40, to opt out and sign a one-plus-one deal. The decision drove chatter of possible discontent and a potential end to his Lakers run. James holds one of the NBA’s rare no-trade clauses. Therefore, James can decide where he would land. Multiple NBA insiders have said that the Dallas Mavericks are high on James’ list. Joining the Mavericks would allow James to reunite with Kyrie Irving, join forces with Anthony Davis again, and play under Jason Kidd, who served as an assistant coach during the Lakers’ 2020 NBA championship run. James, Mavericks Outlook LeBron James is 40 years old and will turn 41 on December 30, 2025. However, James is still playing like a top-tier NBA player. If the Dallas Mavericks acquire James, the Mavericks could receive star power, shot creation, and veteran leadership. A Mavericks goal appears to be winning while the team’s NBA championship window is still open. The Mavericks would receive LeBron James (via Lakers), Bronny James (via Lakers), Drew Timme (via Nets), Tyrese Martin (via Nets), a $1.8 million trade exception, and a $1.1 million trade exception. The Mavericks could benefit from a solid core of James, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg and Dereck Lively II. The Lakers would receive Daniel Gafford (via Mavericks), PJ Washington (via Mavericks), Naji Marshall (via Mavericks), Caleb Martin (via Mavericks), Jaden Hardy (via Mavericks), a 2030 Los Angeles Lakers second-round pick (via Nets), a 2031 Los Angeles Lakers second-round pick (via Nets) and a $24.1 million trade exception. The Lakers could start the Luka Doncic era. The Brooklyn Nets would receive Dalton Knecht (via Lakers), Maxi Kleber (via Lakers), Olivier-Maxence Prosper (via Mavericks) and Dwight Powell (via Mavericks). The Nets would serve as a facilitator, as the team would acquire assets while helping two contenders shift money around, and perhaps cash considerations. Final Thoughts It’s highly unlikely that LeBron James will be traded to the Dallas Mavericks. However, nothing can be ruled out. The NBA world saw the Luka Doncic trade to the Los Angeles Lakers this past February, and if they’re old enough to remember, the Jason Kidd trade to the Phoenix Suns in December 1996. If and when James is traded to Dallas, James’ presence can help the Mavericks succeed. James can help improve team chemistry, instill confidence in the team, and build a winning culture. James can play multiple positions as a forward, but a huge concern would be James’ declining gameplay and shooting stats.

Mets Could Steal Massive Star From Their Biggest Rival

Mets Could Steal Massive Star From Their Biggest Rival

In 2024, the New York Mets may have pulled off the biggest jersey swap of all time- acquiring massive free agent Juan Soto on an enormous 15-year, $765 million deal. However, this shouldn’t be the end of the line for New York. The team still has money, and perhaps they can use it to pay for a massive star. Big-Name Free Agent Could Be on the Radar for Mets The Biggest Bat on the Free Agent Market May Not be Kyle Tucker Sure, Kyle Tucker is a younger player with some superstar potential. Some might say that he is a superstar. However, the one very consistent bat is the bat of Kyle Schwarber. Over the last five seasons, Schwarber has hit at least 32 homers. This season is no exception, as he is on pace for 57 home runs. Schwarber strikes out a lot. However, his at-bats usually end in either a homer, a strikeout, or a walk. Schwarber remains one of the most significant game-changing bats on the market. He is heading into his age-33 season, but he reminds many of a Nelson Cruz-type bat. A bat that can last well into the late 30s. Tucker may be a good defender and a possibly excellent bat, but consistency remains on the side of Schwarber. The Mets Shouldn’t Stop at Alonso and Soto Now, the Mets may very well have to contend with another free agency of Pete Alonso. However, if the Mets have learned anything this season, they probably won’t hesitate to sign Alonso, especially with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. off the market. This will leave the Mets with options in free agency. Go big or play it safe and improve minimally. The Mets typically aren’t used to liking Schwarber, who seems to always be on a rival team. However, this doesn’t mean that it is impossible for him to pry away from the Phillies. Sure, the Mets can be content with the signing of Soto and, hopefully, also Alonso. But if New York wants to make the best team ever to play in Queens, New York may very well want to go after some of the bigger names on the market. If many people thought the Mets were in contention for Vladdy, then they can definitely be in contention for Schwarber. The Mets also don’t have a definitive DH, and even with some saying Soto is a potential DH in the future, Soto will likely continue to play the outfield. Schwarber would be a dream DH for New York. Schwarber Will Not Be Easy To Sign, But Neither Was Soto If there is one thing that many have learned over the last few seasons, it is that the Mets don’t just settle. The Mets have made huge trades, huge signings, and more. Schwarber has made it relatively clear that he likes Philly, and even his teammates have expressed that they want him to stay. And of course, Philly is capable of providing the money for Schwarber to stay. However, New York is even more capable. If the Mets make a good trade ahead of the deadline, young players live up to their potential, and the Mets make a big splash in free agency, then New York would be virtually unstoppable. It used to be the New York Yankees that got everything they wanted. Now, there might be a new sheriff in town. The Mets are starting to turn the corner and are becoming the new juggernaut in New York. Perhaps the Soto signing was just the beginning. Signing a free agent away from a bitter rival wouldn’t be easy. However, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time for New York.
