EDM legends Daft Punk announce retirement

Leave it to Daft Punk to revolutionize retirement, as the daring EDM duo announced the end of their 28-year-old run together with a video titled "Epilogue" posted Monday:

And since Daft Punk always erred on the side of mystery—covert robot costumes and all—their publicist, Kathryn Frazier, exclusively confirmed the breakup to Variety's Jem Aswad.

In the eerily silent YouTube video, two robots walk together in an abandoned desert. Eventually, one detonates the other. "Touch," a track featuring Paul Williams from 2013's Random Access Memories, plays while the sun slowly sets in the distance. If that sounds familiar, that's because the excerpt was pulled from Daft Punk's Electroma (2006):

Daft Punk, comprised of French musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, originally formed in 1993. The two had known each other since attending grade school together in Paris. In an extensive Pitchfork cover story by Ryan Dombal, their public-facing persona was examined alongside their music-making process. "Looking at robots is not like looking at an idol," Homem-Christo said. “It's not a human being, so it's more like a mirror—the energy people send to the stage bounces back and everybody has a good time together rather than focusing on us.” Bangalter added: "We don't talk about our private lives because they're private."

Their philosophy was validated by 12 Grammy nominations—resulting in six wins, including best dance recording ("Harder Better Faster Stronger") and best electronic/dance album (Alive 2007) in 2008. Daft Punk's mainstream influence hit apex in 2013 with Grammy-winning record "Get Lucky" featuring Pharrell Williams and Grammy-winning album Random Access Memories.

Random Access Memories was Daft Punk's last of their four studio albums together, resulting in a mind-boggling discography. More recently, they made waves as prominent features on The Weeknd's title track "Starboy," which is certified eight-times platinum, and "I Feel It Coming" from his 2016 Grammy-winning album.
