The latest Netflix original film stars Adam Sandler as Jakub, a man six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system who realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.

Spaceman, directed by Johan Renck, hit the platform on March 1 following its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and is an adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfař's novel Spaceman of Bohemia.

Screenwriter Colby Day was responsible for the script, and he recently offered his followers the chance to ask him about being a working screenwriter who just had their first major feature film debut on Netflix.

X (formerly known as Twitter) user @IMDBorg asked Day, "Did the casting influence any revisions to the script?"

Day responded with, "100% Johan and I met and worked together for a week after we knew we had Adam to try to retool the script to work more specifically for him!"

Another interesting question came from @TheSpaceshipper, who asked, "How do you adapt a book on screen? What's your process?"

The response was, "I read the book 2-3 times, then started marking sections that felt really central to what made the book work for me emotionally. I started to put those into a doc in some sort of coherent order that matched the book, then tried to make sure everything could be achieved visually"

@bambam_angel asked, "What's something that process of writing and pitching this film has taught you that may help other writers in ways that may not think of?"

And Day said, "I would say it’s really valuable to make something that’s extremely unique. It may be harder to find a partner at first but making something unlike anything else out there then makes it a lot easier for people to get excited about it".

The whole thread offers incredible insight to the process of how a Netflix original manifests.

Speaking of manifesting, Day also shared some inspirational posts, including his tweet from 2022 that said he would one day have the number one movie on Netflix.

He also showed a billboard for Spaceman in Times Square on the corner he used to hand out tickets to comedy shows.

Spaceman is available to stream on Netflix now.
