The next major cop drama is almost here. For fans of the novels of Michael Connelly, the world of Bosch is about to continue in the all-new TV series Ballard. Based on the six books in the Ballard series, which began with the 2017 novel The Late Show, the new Amazon Prime Video show will follow the Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she attempts to solve several cold cases in Los Angeles.
Like Bosch and Bosch: Legacy before it, Ballard is sure to be a hit among those who love Connelly's rich world of idiosyncratic detectives, and twisting mysteries. Here's what to know about the cast, the release date, the trailers, and the plot of Ballard.
Ballard will debut on Prime Video on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. This puts it out just four months after its parent series, Bosch: Legacy, concluded with its final Season 3 episode.
Relevantly, and in a change from both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, all 10 episodes of Ballard will hit Prime on July 9. So, you'll be able to binge the entire show starting on July 9. This means you'll definitely need to watch out for spoilers that week! With Bosch: Legacy, Amazon tended to drop episodes in chunks, not the entire series at once.
Yes! There is a trailer for Ballard. In it, we see Maggie Q's titular character reeling from the events of Bosch: Legacy (in which her character was introduced) and tackling a series of complex cold cases. The trailer don't reveal much, which, let's just say, is a good thing. You'll really not want to know too much about this one going in.
Though the series is centered on Detective Renée Ballard, there's also a major ensemble component to this show. Because it's all about Ballard going after cold cases — murders that have long been unsolved — she's got an entire team of both ex-cops and straight-up volunteers. Ballard also has a few enemies, too, both in the LAPD and in the local government.
Here's who is playing who:
After being demoted, Detective Ballard throws herself into the hopeless, and forgotten files of various cold cases. The season quickly draws a connection between several cold cases, and dives into corruption in the LAPD, which Ballard and her crew of misfits hope to defeat from the inside. The basic set-up of Ballard seems to be loosely based on Connelly's first stand-alone novel featuring the character, the 2017 book The Late Show.
Each episode is connected to the previous one, though there are interlinking mysteries throughout the show. Again, this takes place in the same world as Bosch, and one of the cases is connected to his career as a detective. Ballard isn't a Bosch sequel outright, but much of the vibe, and the style of mysteries will make fans of that show very happy.
