Rachel Brosnahan is ready to officially join the superhero genre as Lois Lane when James Gunn's Superman hits theaters next month. "I’ve never done something that has a baked-in fan base already," she shared while speaking with Amanda Seyfried for Interview Magazine.
She continued to open up throughout the conversation about the audition process and how Gunn told her that she got the role. "David and I only read together once, which was wild. But that was in the spring of 2023," the actress revealed, referring to her co-star David Corenswet, who plays Superman.
In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.
As for how she got the news from the director and DC Studios head: "I was in an Aritzia bathroom in SoHo looking at my phone and it said: 'Maybe: James Gunn,'" adding, "Maybe James Gunn is calling me. I’m trying to get out of there before he realizes that I’m in a bathroom, but I’m not about to miss this call. I answered and he said, 'How would you like to be Lois Lane?'"
The rest of the cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Mariìa Gabriela de Fariìa, Wendell Pierce, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced. "I’d come back. We had a great time. There’s also so many people in this cast who I didn’t get to work with," she commented. "It was amazing. Everyone was there [at the table read]. I think they filmed some of it. They took a lot of pictures. When we first got these jobs, we got to read the script once, on one device. So to hear it out loud got us all really excited."
Gunn also produces alongside DC Studios head Peter Safran. Nikolas Korda, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars Winther serve as executive producers.
"I don’t know why people say yes only to then turn around and complain about it. Look, I don’t want to s--- on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them. Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it," Brosnahan concluded.
DC Studios' first feature film will be released on July 11.
