Bill Murray names one director he regrets never working with

Bill Murray has been making media rounds recently in support of the movie "The Friend," which came out this weekend. The actor has been in some of the biggest comedies in film history and worked with some acclaimed directors. He's been a staple in the works of Wes Anderson and Jim Jarmusch, and also appeared in films directed by Sofia Coppola, Sydney Pollack, Cameron Crowe, and Tim Burton.

There is, however, one director that Murray could have worked with, but chose not to, much to his ongoing chagrin.

In a wide-ranging interview on Howard Stern's show, Murray says that he called Clint Eastwood out of the blue soon after the actor had starred in "Stripes." Given Murray's reputation as being hard to get a hold of professionally, it's remarkable he made the effort to ring up Eastwood. According to Murray, Eastwood asked him, "Would you ever want to do another service comedy?" and Murray hesitated, fearing he would be typecast and end up making the same kind of movie over and over. "Stripes" was still quite early in Murray's career, after all.

A few years later, Eastwood starred in, and directed, "Heartbreak Ridge." "It’s one of the few regrets I have is that I didn’t do it," the actor lamented, before adding he has voiced that regret to Eastwood on multiple occasions. Murray then noted Eastwood hasn't been sweating it, quipping, "He’s a very resilient fella."

Of course, there have been plenty of opportunities for the two to work together in the intervening years, so this may be more about the specific project then simply Murray wanting to work with Eastwood. That, technically, is still possible. Eastwood may be turning 95 this year, but he just had a movie, "Juror No. 2," come out in 2024. Make it happen, Bill and Clint!
