Delroy Lindo tapped to star in next "Godzilla x Kong" movie

The "Godzilla x Kong" movies are gloriously-dumb, delightfully-fun movies. This is very much a compliment

Now, the "MonsterVerse" brought to us by Legendary Pictures didn't start that way. "Godzilla" tried to be serious. "Kong: Skull Island" wanted to be this retro thing. "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" was a pile of nothing. Then, they cracked it. The two "Godzilla x Kong" movies make no sense, having Rebecca Hall saying stuff like "Kong bows to no one," and they rule. In terms of turn-your-brain-off franchises, "Godzilla x Kong" is crushing it.

Fortunately, another "Godzilla x Kong" movie is in the works. Also, once again, an overqualified cast is being put together. The latest addition to the untitled (or un-subtitled, as it were) is none other than Delroy Lindo.

If you aren't familiar with Lindo's name, you have likely seen him in a film like "Get Shorty" or "Da 5 Bloods." He's a talented actor who will hopefully lean into the "Godzilla x Kong" tone with gusto. We believe in you, Delroy!

Now, there is a whiff of a reason for concern in that Adam Wingard, who directed the two prior "Godzilla x Kong" films, is not returning for this one. Instead, the relatively-unknown Grant Sputore, director of 2019's "I Am Mother," will take the helm. That movie is a post-apocalyptic story about a girl living in a bunker being raised by a robot, so he might be up to the task.

Kaitlyn Dever was the first name announced as being added to the "Godzilla x Kong" cast, followed by Jack O'Connell. Dan Stevens will be returned as his "The New Empire" character Trapper who is, of course, a veterinarian who specializes in giant monsters. Notably, we have not seen either Rebecca Hall or Brian Tyree Henry's names mentioned, but fingers shall be crossed for at least a cameo from both.
