Chris Columbus, long known as one of Hollywood’s genuinely nice guys, is out promoting his new film 'The Thursday Murder Club.' Usually, the only time Columbus goes negative in interviews is when Donald Trump’s cameo in 'Home Alone 2' comes up. After all, this is the director behind the first two 'Home Alone' movies and the first two 'Harry Potter' films, so when he speaks on those franchises, it carries some weight. With HBO’s upcoming 'Harry Potter' series in the works, Columbus has made it clear he thinks the whole thing feels unnecessary. In his view, the original films still stand tall, and rebooting them so soon doesn’t make much sense creatively.
It all started with the cast photos, specifically the photo of Nick Frost as Hagrid:
I’m seeing these photographs… and [Nick Frost is] wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me was like: What’s the point? I thought the costumes and everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same.
If you haven't seen Frost as Hagrid, here is a photographic reference:
Previously, Columbus was diplomatic about HBO’s upcoming 'Harry Potter' series, even saying he liked the idea of being able to bring more of the early books to life than he had the chance to on film. Now, though, he’s sounding a little less enthused. To him, the project feels short on imagination, basically a retread of what’s already been done. And look, Columbus has been directing big studio movies for over 40 years, so he knows the reason HBO is doing this: the money.
Fans have even noticed how much the new Harry looks like Daniel Radcliffe, which makes the whole thing feel like HBO is saying, “Hey, remember the movies? Just watch this show instead. And, uh, try not to think too hard about J.K. Rowling.” Columbus probably won’t be tuning in come 2027, but plenty of people will, if only to see how it stacks up against the originals.
