Huh. Well, I have to say, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein retelling, The Bride, definitely has the most shoot-outs of any Frankenstein movie I’ve ever seen. It almost feels more like a gritty, gangster movie than a Universal Monsters one. But despite that, all the hallmarks of a Frankenstein tale are there: reanimation, staples to the forehead, wild hair. So, okay, here we go. Of course, The Bride centers around the Bride of Frankenstein, giving her a voice, an attitude, and a point of view. We love that idea, we just don’t yet know what to make of all the component parts of this movie. You can watch the full trailer of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride below.
We guess when you move Frankenstein to the world of 1930s Chicago, a gritty retelling full of guns and gangsters is precisely what you’ll get. Even monsters are a product of their time. The synopsis of The Bride, released alongside the trailer, lets us understand a little bit more about the chaos we’re seeing in this tease. It shares:
From Maggie Gyllenhaal (Academy Award-nominated writer/director of The Lost Daughter) and starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley and Academy Award winner Christian Bale comes THE BRIDE! A bold, iconoclastic take on one of the world’s most compelling stories. A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!
Bonnie and Clyde-esque Frankenstein and The Bride, we guess! Again, we don’t necessarily dislike it, but we’re still trying to get the surreal feeling of it. There’s a reason why so many Universal Monsters movies are set in gothic castles and remote locations; it just makes the romance of them come to life. Against the rowdy streets of 1930s Chicago, we get instead Frankenstein strutting in the streets with a Fedora. And hey, maybe that is exactly the Frankenstein some history buff has been waiting for! We guess we’ll need to see more than just the trailer to judge The Bride.
The Bride does have an all-star cast, who we see in action in the trailer. In addition to Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, the cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, with Bening, Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz. Maggie Gyllenhaal is both writer and director of the movie.
The Bride will release in theaters in North America on March 6, 2026, and internationally beginning March 4, 2026.
