Despite saying that there was no way she’d reprise her role due to Helen Shivers’ death in the original film, Sarah Michelle Gellar is in I Know What You Did Last Summer. In the first film, the Croaker Queen and Julie’s close friend dies during a Fourth of July parade after a tense and lengthy chase scene. Similar to Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis in Scream V and Scream VI, Helen appears in a posthumous manner as a creepy ghost figure.
Danica, a rich girl and fellow former Croaker Queen, takes some interest in Helen’s life and death while investigating the 1997 murders. Danica falls asleep at the police station and has a nightmare about Helen Shivers. The deceased queen stands with a hook over Danica’s fiancé’s body and taunts her, saying that his death and others are her fault. The dream ends with blood running from Helen’s crown as she gives Danica an ominous warning about her impending death. Helen’s face rots away before Danica wakes up at the police station.
Fans were almost certain that Karla would reunite with Julie and Ray. In the second film, she’s Julie’s bestie and roommate who “wins” a radio competition for an island getaway. When they get there, it’s a setup by Ben Willis’ son to kill them all. Karla barely survives the attack and is nearly left on the island when Julie and Ray are rescued by a helicopter. Seriously, they didn’t even go check to see if the girl survived her injuries. Since then, we’ve assumed that Karla moved on with her life and stayed far away from Julie and Ray.
Sadly, a reunion between the trio did not happen. Ray ended up being the mastermind behind these killings, encouraging his bar manager Stevie to don the slicker and hook after her friend Sam was killed in that accident. During the credits, Karla is in her comfy home with her husband watching the news. She sees that Ray is dead and Julie survived an attack. A knock on her door reveals that Julie is there to see her. The college pals embrace before Julie shows Karla a picture of the two of them with their faces marked out. The back of the picture has a note that simply says “It Isn’t Over.” Karla is more than ready to help track down the killer and fight alongside Julie.
It seems we are getting another I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel after all with Karla and Julie! Hopefully, the franchise doesn’t bring Brandy back just to kill off Karla. We know that Stevie survived the killings, but why would she go after Julie and Karla? Is she going to avenge Ray’s death? If so, what does Karla have to do with it? She didn’t have any involvement in anything that went down.
Or, is there someone connected to the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer who wants to kill them both? Perhaps Stevie and Ray’s recent spree encouraged someone else to get into the murder game. I guess we will see what happens next. For now, we are waiting to see if a sequel is truly on the way.
