Did you know a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot is in the works at Hulu? It's true! The show is being run this time by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, last seen running the show (with plenty of creative input from Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne) over at "Poker Face." Joss Whedon, who wrote the original 1992 movie and ran the TV adaption is still not particularly welcome in a lot of cultural spaces these days.
However, Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui - who directed and produced the 1992 film respectively - are getting executive producer credits. Quick aside related to that: The "Buffy" movie is really good and really fun and, frankly, better than the show. Whedon was not a fan of the movie, but his taste (and decisions) are clearly in question. The reboot is still casting up for the pilot, but some more names have been announced.
One of the biggest name of the bunch is Jack Cutmore-Scott. He recently played Freddy on the reboot of "Frasier" on Paramount+, and past credits include "Tenet" and "Oppenheimer" in small roles. He also played the titular Cooper Barrett in FOX's atrocious sitcom "Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life," a show for which those responsible should have been tried at The Hague.
Sarah Bock who had a memorable turn as a Deputy Manager on "Severance" is also joining the show. Also in the mix are Ava Jean and Daniel di Tomasso.
All of these actors have character names, but the plot for the reboot is under wraps, and none of the names are from the prior show, so they aren't pertinent just yet. Previously cast, though, were Ryan Kiera Armstrong and one Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy in the original show. Expectations are that Gellar will play Buffy, who will be training a new slayer played by Armstrong. This tracks based on the lore of the Buffy-verse.
If you adhere to the ethos of the original movie, you operate with the sense that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is not sacred and need not be taken seriously. While a lack of original ideas is plaguing film and television, let us not wring our hands about this reboot. Maybe it'll be fun. If it is, some of these new cast members will likely be contributing to that.
