It’s been well over a decade since Chris Hemsworth first wielded the mighty hammer Mjölnir in Marvel Studios’ original Thor. Since then, he’s been in three sequels and four Avengers films. Soon, he’ll film his scenes for Avengers: Doomsday. Hemsworth just posted a video looking back at his time as the God of Thunder, and thanking the fans for all their support and love for Thor. The video from his YouTube channel, titled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,” sure makes it sound like Avengers: Doomsday will be Hemsworth’s last time as the Asgardian Avenger. But is it all just misdirection? You can watch the full video right here:
Along with the video, Chris Hemsworth left this message for his fans:
Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjölnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable… Next up, Doomsday!
Of course, this could all be misdirection to create extra hype for Avengers: Doomsday. It’s already a big deal, perhaps the biggest movie ever made, so it’s not like it needs the extra push. But if fans think it’s the movie where Thor dies, all of that creates an extra “must-see” factor. But we would be genuinely surprised if he didn’t appear in Secret Wars too, although that one feels like a more likely final Hemsworth appearance as Thor.
After all, we still need that Easter egg between Wade and the Odinson from Deadpool & Wolverine to pay off. Of course, maybe Marvel is just trolling us and this week they will announce a fifth Thor movie. But if this is indeed the end for Hemsworth’s Thor, it’s been a truly memorable ride.
