It was a "total bummer" for James Gunn to tell Henry Cavill he was out as Superman

James Gunn's "Superman" looks to have kicked his DC Studios era off with a bang, continuing to pad his resume as one of the most-successful comicbook hero movie directors of all-time. Of course, the birth of his creative control of DC movies came with recasting Superman. David Corenswet stepped into the role, which meant the unceremonius end of Henry Cavill's tenure. As Gunn explained on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, that process ended up messier than it should have been and was a "total bummer" for Gunn.

As Gunn explains it, part of the deal for him to take over as DC Studios was for him to do his own Superman movie with a new actor. The ink wasn't even dry on Gunn's deal when it was announced Cavill would be staying on as Superman. Which, of course, was never part of the plan. "And I’m like, ‘What is going on?’ We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do ‘Superman.’ So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer," said Gunn.

According to Gunn, there was a bloc within the studio that was trying to force Gunn's hand on Cavill. It didn't work.

Fortunately, as awkward as it may have been, it all worked out fine. Gunn and Peter Safran (the other co-head of DC Studios, the business guy of the duo) sat down with Cavill to relay the news.

He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, "The only thing I ask is that I’m able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys."

Not only that, but Gunn said that not only is he not against casting Cavill in another DC role, but that he would "love" to cast Cavill. So yeah, Cavill lost the iconic, well-compensated role of playing Superman, but everything seems to have shaken out fine. Plus, he is a rich, famous actor and he got to have that cool mustache in the best "Mission: Impossible" movie.
