One of the unexpected delights (of many) in Peacemaker‘s first season came near the start of every episode. The show’s opening credits featured the entire cast performing a choreographed dance set to to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It.” Now season two has given us a new song with a new routine. While some will prefer the original and some will prefer this latest version, there’s no question which one proved harder to film. James Gunn said season two’s intro for Peacemaker were more difficult for one very obvious reason: more cast members who can’t dance.
During a virtual media roundtable before the season that Nerdist attended, a reporter asked Gunn about shooting season two’s opening credits sequence and how it compared to filming the original. “The biggest challenge for me, really, was that we have may more bad dancers this season,” Gunn said.
Perfect.
And who specifically made this season so hard? In true James Gunn fashion he had no problem calling out his friends. “So shoutout to Frank Grillo and Tim Meadows and Michael Rooker, who were what Robert Patrick was,” said Gunn. “A singular bad dancer last season, now is many.”
When someone said it wasn’t noticeable, Gunn disagreed. “If you rewatch it enough, you’ll see it. Focus on Rooker and you’ll see his dancing abilities,” he said. Obviously we’ve since done that many times and….yeah. Yeah. We won’t name names, but we also think Gunn left some others off the hook, too. There’s some shoddy dancing.
As for the sequence’s song, Gunn said Foxy Shazam’s “Oh Lord” was the only choice. Gunn said, “I don’t know if there were any other tracks that were close. There were a couple of other tracks that I considered. There was another Foxy song I considered. But at the end of the day I thought “Oh Lord” fit the season the best in the same way that ‘Do Ya Wanna Taste It’ fit the first season.”
Peacemaker‘s opening credits continue to be a delight no matter what songs Gunn uses. But him naming Grillo, Meadows, and Rooker as bad dancers makes season two’s extra delightful.
