Newcomer "The Studio" throws its weight around in comedy Emmy categories

Yes, "Hacks" and "The Bear" are back with plenty of Emmy nominations, but there is a new player in the mix in the comedy categories looking to upend things. Apple TV+'s Hollywood satire "The Studio" didn't just show up. It earned 23 nominations, most of any comedy series.

"The Studio" is laden with guest stars, which helped on the nomination front, but there was more to it than that. In addition to the Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, Seth Rogen, Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, and Emmy winner Catherine O'Hara got nods.

The usual suspects from "The Bear" are in the mix, though, and nobody is coming for Jean Smart's crown when it comes to Outstanding Lead Actress. The only way she loses is if Emmy voters are tired of rewarding her, and that seems unlikely. Also, shout out to Uzo Aduba, nominated for lead actress for "The Residence," even though that show has been canceled.

The supporting actor category is quite interesting. Bowen Yang is once again in the mix for his "SNL" work. The voters threw the legendary Harrison Ford a nomination for "Shrinking" because if you can possibly get Harrison Ford to your event to sit in the audience, you do it. Plus, people like him in "Shrinking." Colman Domingo also grabbed a nomination for "The Four Seasons," and as a guy with multiple Oscar nominations who is one of our better living actors, that's not a terribly surprising outcome. Interestingly, Jeff Hiller got a nomination for the little-seen "Somebody Somewhere," which is a nice surprise among the many big names to get nods.

"Abbott Elementary" is still holding it down for network sitcoms, but any wins would be unlikely at this point. That show had its moment. It feels like "The Studio" is going to be going head-to-head with "Hacks," as showbiz people vote on which showbiz satire they like better. How very insular!
