The 2025 Emmy nominations arrived Tuesday, and, fittingly, drama abounds in the drama category. Last year's big winner was "Shogun," but "Shogun" wasn't in the mix this year. That opens the door to see which shows will emerge into the vacuum. Based on Emmy nominations, the odds are in favor of Apple TV+'s "Severance."
"Severance" got a whopping 27 nominations, more than any other show. Obviously, plenty of those are technical nominations, but the show is up for Outstanding Drama Series, and several actors got nominations. Adam Scott is up for Outstanding Lead Actor, though there is much curiosity if Noah Wyle will finally win an Emmy thanks to "The Pitt." Notably, three "Severance" actors got Supporting Actor nominations, the same as HBO's "The White Lotus." That show, with its massive ensemble, always racks up supporting nods and to that end, four actresses are up for supporting.
"Andor," the popular "Star Wars" show on Disney+, did get an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, but Diego Luna nor anybody else in the cast got a nod. While network dramas really got waxed, one person did manage to step up to the plate...
Kathy Bates not only set a record by becoming the oldest Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee at 77, but she's generally considered to be the favorite to win. A career achievement win? Sure, but who cares? She's Kathy Bates! She has an Oscar! Now she's carrying the torch for network procedurals at the Emmys!
There is going to be a lot of first-time winners at this years Emmys on the drama front, with "Shogun" not in the mix and "Succession" and "Game of Thrones" in the past. That should make for an intriguing ceremony.
