Jelly Roll's appearance on Wednesday's episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" wound up being a lot more eventful than the 41-year-old singer probably expected. That's because Rogan presented Jelly Roll with the career surprise of a lifetime.

Rogan invited country music star Craig Morgan to appear in a pre-taped message welcoming the "Save Me" singer as an official member of the prestigious Grande Ole Opry.

Jelly Roll moved to tears by surprise

To set up the moment, Rogan played a clip of one of Jelly Roll's prior performances at the Opry. At one point, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, explained how Morgan was a major inspiration of his, particularly how Morgan's song "Almost Home" helped him through his stint in prison.

At that point, Morgan's prerecorded video appeared on screen, welcoming a stunned Jelly Roll to country music's most exclusive club.

"I'll never forget meeting you [at] the Grand Ole Opry and how much it meant to me to hear you say my music helped you get through some really tough times," Morgan said. "That's one thing country music does really well. And who would've ever dreamed back then that I'd be back at the Opry House today to say Jelly Roll, you're officially invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. It's an honor to say welcome to the family, brother."

Jelly Roll immediately broke down in tears, covering his face. He then explained to Rogan how he once bought tickets to the Opry just to see Morgan perform.

"He comes out and sings 'Almost Home,' and I had, I'm not bulls------g, I'd maybe cried 10 times in my life at that point," Jelly Roll said. "I cried and cried. I cried like I'm crying here now, and I just remember thinking, 'Man, I wanna make people feel the way he makes me feel. That's what I want to do. I did it, Joe."

Grand Ole Opry membership, explained

Less than 80 artists are currently members of the Grand Ole Opry. Each performance of the country music concert and radio program features guest stars alongside Opry members.

You can find the full membership list here. As far as criteria and the selection process, it is an undertaking led by management, with input from Opry members.

"The decision to increase the Opry’s ranks is, and always has been, made exclusively by the show’s management," says the official Opry website. "The people who’ve been entrusted with the Opry’s tradition and future direction take into account all the standards of success in country music—radio airplay, recorded music sales, touring success, industry recognition—when considering an act for membership. The Opry considers career accomplishment as well as the potential for continued success."

Jelly Roll has played at the Grand Ole Opry several times before, including on multiple occasions in 2025. His most recent appearance came in September as part of a pair of shows benefiting the Judge Dinkins Educational Center and Buddy DeFord Charitable Fund.
