An intense loss has hit Hollywood. The legendary director Rob Reiner, responsible for classic movies such as This is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride, and his wife have been reported dead. The New York Times shares that “police are investigating what they described as an apparent homicide.” Meanwhile, Deadline notes that “Sources say the Oscar-nominated director and his wife had been stabbed, and the Los Angeles Police Department is on the scene and investigating.” Truly, this is a horrific story with a horrific outcome, no matter what the details turn out to be.
The movies Rob Reiner directed have shaped many generations and continue to influence new viewers who discover them. I do not know a soul in this world who does not love The Princess Bride, and see it as a stunning example of the richness and humanity that cinema can bring to our world. In addition to this, Rob Reiner was an advocate for positive change during times that are tough and trying. Reiner advocated for early childhood development programs in California and fought for LGBTQ+ rights, among other things.
Although this death feels unreckonable, the family of Rob Reiner has asked for privacy during this time. They shared the following statement: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.” We wish them as much ease as could possibly exist during this tragedy.
Losing icons with much work left still to accomplish is always heartbreaking. But we know that Rob Reiner’s legacy will live on through his work and through all those whose lives he helped better. We hope that all he touched follow in his footsteps and strive to do good in the world.
