Ready Player Two is currently in development, confirms Steven Spielberg.
The legendary director has a producer role for the sequel to 2018’s sci-fi blockbuster, and detailed where his team is at currently.
"We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next," Spielberg tells Showbiz 411. With the film at the earliest possible stage of development, this suggests a release date of no earlier than 2026.
A sequel was almost inevitable, however. The first, which Spielberg directed, made 607 million USD at the global box office, and is by all metrics a monster hit.
Ready Player Two, like its predecessor, will be based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline. The novel is a sequel to Cline’s Ready Player One, which released in 2011.
It continues the story of Wade Watts who, after winning control of a vast virtual reality called OASIS, discovers an advanced virtual reality headset and sets off on a quest to obtain seven mysterious shards.
Once again, it’ll be packed with pop culture references. At one point Wade visits a virtual world dedicated entirely to pop star Prince.
Ready Player Two isn't the only project Spielberg is developing. There's a Netflix Alien documentary produced by Steven Spielberg’s company dropping soon.
