Ryan Reynolds has found great success by bringing R-rated antics to the world of Marvel superheroes with the "Deadpool" movies. After Disney got the rights to the various Marvel characters who were over at 20th Century Fox (by, you know, buying Fox), Reynolds now finds himself working alongside the House of Mouse. "Deadpool and Wolverine" certainly panned out well, but evidently Reynolds has ideas for Disney beyond a certain red-clad mercenary.
Reynolds said that he once posited to the folks at Disney, "Why don’t we do an R-rated 'Star Wars' property?" He also asserted it didn't have to be "A+ characters," so Reynolds wasn't exactly thinking Disney would be down to plop Luke Skywalker or Kylo Ren into an R-rated movie. Maybe R2-D2. For all we know that dude is swearing all the time as is.
The actor also added, "And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion." Coming from a driving force behind the juvenile vulgarity of the "Deadpool" movies, that does lead to skepticism, but people can contain multitudes.
However, Reynolds doesn't envision this nebulous idea as a vehicle for himself. "I’m not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit. I’d want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes," he said.
While the world of Marvel has gotten into R-rated, or in the case of "Daredevil: Born Again" TV-MA, territory, "Star Wars" has not. "Andor" was decidedly dark and mature, though, and it is probably not coincidental that the love and critical acclaim for that show has been high. Even if Reynolds doesn't get to bring an R-rated "Star Wars" property into existence, he's not wrong about it being a good idea worth exploring.
