Scott Speedman on returning to 'Grey's Anatomy': 'It just felt right'

Grey's Anatomy fans squealed when news broke Scott Speedman was signed on as a series regular for season 18.

The 46-year-old actor stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show to discuss how the opportunity to reprise his 2018 role of Dr. Nick Marsh came to be. Ellen Pompeo, who has starred as the titular Dr. Meredith Grey since the record-breaking primetime medical drama's 2005 premiere, personally reached out to Speedman.

"I had just gotten off another show, and she sent me the script," he explained, presumably referring to his stint on Animal Kingdom. "To be honest, it was a very well-written script, and I thought it would be fun to go do. And I really like her and just decided to take a shot."

That culminated in the March 2018 episode "One Day Like This," where we were introduced to Nick after he collapsed from a blood clot after a kidney transplant weeks before. Meredith worked to save Nick's kidney, and his life. The two characters obviously had chemistry, but at the time, that appeared to be the end of Dr. Nick Marsh's arc.

"I was naïve to believe that would be my only episode," Speedman told Barrymore. "But as soon as that episode aired, they started asking me to come back, and it wasn't the right time. But this year, they asked me to come back, and it just felt right, so I jumped on. To be honest, I'm having a lot of fun doing it."

Nick re-entered the Grey's world during the 18th season premiere on Sept. 30, when Meredith travels to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota because a library was being dedicated to her late mother, Dr. Ellis Grey (Kate Burton).

In the following episodes, she's offered the opportunity to help cure Parkinson's and will be splitting her time between Seattle and Minnesota.

Grey's airs every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. Watch Speedman's interview below.
