After country star Megan Moroney said that the Carter family “invented country music” at the American Music Awards on Monday night, singer Shaboozey was caught rolling his eyes. Now, the 30-year-old is speaking out about his reaction.
“The Bar Song” singer and Moroney presented the award for Favorite Country Duo or Group, which was won by Dan + Shay, on May 26. Shaboozey couldn’t help but react to what Moroney read off the teleprompter before they announced the winner.
“Country music has been an important part of AMA history,” he said. “The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride.”
“That same year, Favorite Female [Country] Artist went to Lynn Anderson,” Moroney said. “And this award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music.” At the latter half of the statement, Shaboozey rolled his eyes and gave a curt laugh.
The Carter family was known as the “First Family of Country Music,” who incorporated the work of Black guitarist Lesley Riddle into their songs. They also traveled around Appalachia with A.P. Carter on their trip where he collected songs from other artists. Maybelline Carter, A.P.’s sister-in-law, added elements of Riddle’s finger-picking into her playing. The family also recorded several of Riddle’s compositions, who introduced them to Black musical traditions that later influenced what is now country music.
Shaboozey wrote about the “real history of country music” on X. “The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike,” he tweeted.

“When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…” Shaboozey ended.
Another example of this is country musician Rhiannon Giddens‘ banjo playing was sampled on Beyonce‘s song “Texas Hold ‘Em,” off her first country album, Cowboy Carter. Shaboozey is also featured on the record. Since Beyonce’s married last name is Carter, some fans might have thought the duo was talking about her and her husband, Jay-Z, but he was talking about Black artists in country music in general and how they don’t get the recognition
In May, Shaboozey told People that his strength is being a “Black artist in country music.” “I loved that there was so much room for some diversity in the space and to stand out. I love standing out,” he told the publication.
“I love that I’m different. I think it’s my superpower. [I’m] not feeling like I’m not allowed in this space because of the way I look or the way I dress or the way I present myself. If anything, hopefully it opens doors for people.”
Other popular Black country artists include Darius Rucker, Kane Brown, Jimmie Allen, and more.

Batman: Caped Crusader is the latest retelling of the legendary Dark Knight’s saga. It follows the classic tale of the hero combating Gotham City’s criminal underworld. And he must also contend with deadly supervillains and the law. At the same time, he faces his internal demons and learns the meaning of justice. Fans immensely enjoyed the show despite having reservations about certain aspects. Yet it did set up for an exciting Season Two, which is currently in production. But what do we know about this upcoming installment of this animated DC series? Talking About Batman: Caped Crusader Produced by Bruce Timm, Batman: Caped Crusader takes place in a noir-styled Gotham City. And, of course, it follows the young billionaire Bruce Wayne and his vigilante escapades. The twist is we’re witnessing the starting stages of his superhero career. He’s broody, serious, and emotionally distant from others, including his faithful butler Alfred. Additionally, his constant crusading puts him in danger of becoming like the fiends he faces. Nevertheless, Bruce continues his crimefighting efforts to protect Gotham and its citizens. His actions, unfortunately, make him the police department’s number one target. He has allies, though, such as Commissioner Gordon and his public defender daughter Barbara. Season One comes with a cavalcade of foes for the Dark Knight to face. There are renowned favorites like Clayface, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, and a female version of Penguin. It even brought in some obscure ones like Gentleman Ghost, Nocturna, and Onomatopoeia. In the end, it leads up to the arrival of Batman’s most prominent nemesis. Information Regarding Season Two’s Production Season Two of Batman: Caped Crusader has been in production for almost a year now. During this time, a slew of exciting updates have hit the newsfeeds. One of which is the confirmation that Jamie Chung is returning as Harley Quinn. She even expressed interest in seeing her character interacting with Joker. Michella C. Bonilla, who plays Detective Renne Montoya, is also confirmed to come back. The most recent news, however, revolves around renowned comic writer J.M. DeMatteis. In his summer newsletter, he revealed he penned an episode for Season Two. He also expressed delight in helping contribute to this show in that same announcement. DeMatteis has written numerous Marvel comics and even wrote Justice League International for DC Comics. So it’ll be interesting to see what he did for this animated Batman series. Final Thoughts I binge-watched Batman: Caped Crusader one night long ago and liked it. The darker and grittier atmosphere captivated my attention, as did the noir aesthetic. It especially surprised me to hear cursing and witness straight murder in this series. The whole show feels like Batman: The Animated Series for adults, and I like it! As you can guess, I’m excited and ready to watch Batman: Caped Crusader Season Two. I’m especially thrilled that we’re likely getting Joker since he appeared during the finale. I cannot wait to see him clash and challenge the fledgling Caped Crusader. Nonetheless, we won’t know for sure until the season premieres, supposedly later this year.
Padres Officially Release Veteran After Disappointing Season
The San Diego Padres announced Wednesday that they released veteran catcher Martin Maldonado, who was designated for assigment last week. The writing was on the wall when the Padres acquired Freddy Fermin from the Kansas City Royals at last Thursday's trade deadline, upending their catching tandem. Fermin, 30, immediately got the opportunity to take the lion's share of innings behind the plate that he was never going to get in Kansas City. The Padres designated Maldonado for assignment in a corresponding roster move, ending the 38-year-old's tenure in San Diego. Maldonado hit .204 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 64 games, splitting time with Elias Diaz. The 2019 American League Gold Glove Award winner, Maldonado has played 1,230 games for seven different organizations since his 2011 debut. Maldonado is a career .203/.277/.343 hitter with the Milwaukee Brewers (2011-16), Angels (2017-18), Houston Astros (2018-23), Royals (2019), Chicago Cubs (2019), Chicago White Sox (2024) and Padres (2025). Dream Dealt Unfortunate News on Brittney Griner on Thursday
Neck pain isn’t usually headline news, unless it belongs to Brittney Griner. Atlanta Dream fans hoping for another dominant night on Thursday just had their mood checked. Griner is officially out again, and suddenly that winning streak feels a little more fragile. The Dream hit the road to face the struggling Chicago Sky, a team sitting at 8-21 and already missing rookie standout Angel Reese. But while the Sky limp into Wintrust Arena, the Dream aren’t walking in at full strength either. On Wednesday, the team ruled out Griner for a third straight game due to her lingering neck injury. According to the WNBA’s official injury report, she’s still not ready for game action. Griner’s absence is a blow. The nine-time All-Star has been averaging 10.6 points and 5.6 boards while shooting over 51 percent from the field this season. She signed with Atlanta as a free agent this offseason, helping turn the Dream into a serious contender after last year’s playoff sneak-in. But with their star center on the bench again, the Dream will have to get creative, and gritty. Brionna Jones, Naz Hillmon Set to Step Up With Griner out, Atlanta is expected to lean on Brionna Jones and Naz Hillmon to carry the frontcourt load. Jones, another offseason addition, has already started taking on a bigger role. The team will need her presence inside to stretch the Sky’s defense and crash the boards. It’s not all gloom, though.
