At the World Premiere of Disney’s Snow White in Los Angeles, Disney Legend Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the 1989's The Little Mermaid, the sequel, prequel, and TV series, met and spoke with the cast and filmmakers on the red carpet for D23.
The new live-action musical is a reimagining of the studio's timeless animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It stars Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as her Stepmother, the Evil Queen.
"I am starstruck standing next to Rachel. Your performance is spectacular," Benson expressed. "Princess to princess, welcome to the family."
The rest of the cast includes Andrew Burnap, Andrew Barth Feldman, Tituss Burgess, Martin Klebba, Jason Kravits, George Salazar, Jeremy Swift, and Andrew Grotelueschen.
Sadly, not everyone is ready to see an actress with Colombian heritage play the beloved princess. However, Benson isn't the only former princess supporting Zegler. "I know Rachel will be absolutely incredible in this role," Cinderella star Brandy wrote in an email, according to Variety.
"You’re not taking on this role to fit the mold of the critics. You’re doing this for every little Colombian girl who has yet to see themselves in a role like a Disney princess. You’re doing this for the little girl that you once were, who grew up without that representation of her Colombian culture. You are showing her that anything is possible for someone who looks like her, and that is the most important job in the world."
In that same interview with Variety, Zegler expressed that Snow White was her mom's favorite princess growing up and for herself, she grew up in a house where Brandy was Cinderella.
“Obviously, we watched the cartoon. But a child’s mind is the most amazing thing, where it’s just like, 'OK, that’s Cinderella.' But the blond-haired, blue-eyed, blue-dress Cinderella from the 1950s cartoon is also Cinderella. Also, Hilary Duff is Cinderella in A Cinderella Story. I was able to comprehend those things at a young age."
Zegler also revealed that the princess' name will have another origin story in the new remake. "It fell back to another version of Snow White that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby," the actress shared. "And so, the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are."
Snow White opens in theaters on March 21.
