The U.S.S. Enterprise's search for worlds new and strange is coming to an end...eventually. Paramount+ has announced that "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will get a truncated, six-episode fifth-and-final season. The show is a prequel to the original "Star Trek" series, focused on the time when Christopher Pike, played by Anson Mount, was the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Captain Pike has been a piece of "Star Trek" lore from the beginning, but this was the first robust look at the era of Pike's captaincy.
The show's executive producers released a statement, including this missive:
We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU.
Now, it should be noted that this announcement comes a month before the July 17 premiere of the third season of "Strange New Worlds." Yes, the third. And this is an announcement about a fifth-and-final season. The fourth season, which like the third season will have 10 episodes, began filming in March, though, so one assumes the creatives were pondering the possibility of having a fifth season to wrap up their story as intended. Fortunately, the show got that opportunity, even with six episodes instead of 10.
The prediction/presumption has been that "Strange New Worlds" would end by leading directly into the story of "Star Trek: The Original Series." If that is the intent, now the show can make that happen. Eventually. Probably in 2027, maybe in 2028.
